A leak in the Keystone pipeline in the US has resulted in nearly one and a half million gallons of crude oil leaking into the ground. The leak was discovered near Edinburg, North Dakota, according to an official statement by operator TC Energy.
It is already being worked on to remove the contaminated soil and curb the possible damage to the environment. "The safety of the population and the environment have the highest priority," the statement says.
The section of the pipeline was already closed at the beginning of the week after a strong pressure drop, the amount of the leaked crude oil was just now approximately calculated. A total of 9120 barrels (159 liters each) leaked - that is 1,450,080 liters. The amount was equivalent to half filling an Olympic swimming pool, estimated TC Energy.
The Keystone pipeline transports crude oil from Canada to the United States and to the large oil refinery in Cushing, Oklahoma.
