The background is that in the attack three years ago, also stored at Wada data of German athletes, such as table tennis professional Timo Boll or javelin thrower Christina Obergföll, were spied. Investigators attribute the attack to hacker group APT28, also known as "Fancy Bear".
The group is attributed to the Russian military intelligence GRU. Hackers are said to be attacked by numerous attacks on high-profile targets worldwide. In Germany, they are accused of attacking the German Bundestag 2015 and attacking political foundations and the media. In the attack on the Wada hackers had stolen data on doping controls numerous athletes.
