Defective buckles: Mercedes recalls 235,000 cars

2019-11-18T12:43:55.875Z

Several Mercedes models have to go back to the workshops worldwide, because the belt buckles could not work properly. According to the KBA, there is an increased risk of injury in the front seats.

Because of possibly defective buckles Mercedes calls back about 235,000 cars in the workshops. The recall with the internal code "9190308" is addressed to holders around the world. Accordingly, the models C-, E- and G-Class, as well as CLS, GLC and GT from the production period June to October 2018 are affected by the recall.

The buckles of the front seats could incorrectly not recognize a properly seated in the lock seat belt as such. Should the driver ignore the subsequent visual and audible seatbelt prompts, neither the electric nor the pyrotechnic belt tightening would be activated in an accident.

"Increased risk of injury"

"If an accident occurs, the subsequently restricted occupant protection systems increase the risk of injury," states the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA). "A maximum of 1.5 hours of check and possibly necessary exchange of belt buckles could solve the problem, according to a Mercedes spokesman.

In addition, there is a second recall of a further 37,000 Mercedes models. According to KBA, the decorative strip of the rear doors could be loosened here. In Germany, 4000 SUVs of the types GLE and GLS are affected. A direct danger does not exist however. The problem can be remedied within a half-hour workshop visit.
