From Monday, the first driving bans on old diesel cars are valid in several streets of Berlin. In the following week, the passage restrictions will even be extended.

Actually, the driving bans in Berlin should come into force in September. However, delivery problems with the prohibition signs had delayed the passage restrictions for old diesel cars more and more. But it should be ready next Monday. Then in the district Neukölln the first driving bans of the capital are valid.

From 25 November, the first signs in the Neuköllner Silberstein road between Hermannstraße and Karl-Marx-Straße are to be set up, says a spokesman for the Berlin traffic management on demand of SPIEGEL. First, the "Berliner Morgenpost" reported. The prohibition signs for the Hermannstraße between Emser Straße and Silbersteinstraße should follow on Wednesday.

Also in the district center from next week driving restrictions apply on some road sections. According to "Morgenpost", this concerns the electricity road in Moabit between Bugenhagenstraße and Turmstraße and the bridge road between Köpenicker Straße and Holzmarktstraße.

Driving bans decided in July

In the following week, the signs for four further prohibited zones are to be set up in the district of Mitte. These are located on Leipziger Straße between Leipziger Platz and Charlottenstraße and on Friedrichstraße between Dorotheenstraße and Unter den Linden. On Reinhardstraße, the ban applies between Charitéstraße and Kapelle Ufer and on the street Alt-Moabit from Gotzkowsky to Beusselstraße.

In July, the Red-Red-Green Senate had decided not only to extend Tempo-30 zones, but also to introduce driving bans for older diesel vehicles with the Euro 5 emission standard and below in eight streets in Berlin. A necessary measure to comply with the permissible EU limit of 40 micrograms of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) per cubic meter of air. All eight affected sections of the road are located in the Neukölln and Mitte districts.

For a long time, however, it was not possible to provide the relevant prohibition signs and assemble, since the signs are custom-made with long delivery times, as a spokesman for the transport authority announced.
