Mercedes GLB: New, compact SUV model from Swabia

2019-11-27T04:05:16.756Z

Vans and station wagons are practical, but many customers find them uncool. Mercedes therefore crosses the B- and the G-Class. The result is the GLB - a compact SUV that you should not be ashamed of.

The first impression: For an offshoot of the A-Class looks the new Mercedes GLB damn big, and for a relative of the G-class quite puny. Thus, the latest compact newcomer to the Swabians is a mock giant.

That's what the manufacturer says: If you believe Mercedes sales director Britta Seeger, then the GLB must almost automatically become a bestseller. "Every third Mercedes-Benz is now an SUV, every fourth is a compact car, so a compact SUV like the GLB combines all the success factors of our two highest-volume segments." The smaller model GLA, which has become a bestseller among the Mercedes compacts in the last generation, proves that they are quite right. But this is probably also a problem of GLB: He will not only win customers from competitors, but also cannibalize GLA and B-class.

We noticed that, although packaged trendy, it is as variable inside as a van. The third row of seats can be sunk in the floor of the car and the second not only adjust the inclination, but also move up to 14 centimeters. Depending on the configuration, the GLB therefore swallows half a football team or even a washing machine without complaining. And even if adults should think well about the way to the third row, the GLB looks much more spacious than the GLC and the seats at the very back are even inferior to those in the even bigger GLE.

This is not least because the engine in the GLB - unlike the GLC and even larger models - transverse and not longitudinally installed. There is more room for the occupants. In addition, the four-wheel drive in the compact cars takes less space than the "4Matic" -Allradsystem for the rear-wheel drive platforms.

Smaller but more spacious, more economical in consumption and on top of around 10,000 euros cheaper - why should you buy a GLC in the future? Because the bigger brother is a little bit more comfortable overall. The suspension is more sovereign, the automatic more silky than the double-clutch transmission of the GLB. However, whether you want to pay more money for basically less car, is up to you.

You have to know that: The Mercedes GLB is still in this year at the start and costs at least 37,747 euros. It is available with the same equipment and the same drives as A-Class and Co. - ie with the so-called widescreen cockpit including the infotainment system MBUX as well as digital players like the preconfigured wellness programs. Among the assistance systems are also an active assistance in the tracking and the distance control.

The engine range initially comprises three diesel and petrol engines. The diesels have every two liters of displacement and develop 116, 150 or 190 hp. The gasoline engines range from a 1.3-liter with 163 hp on a 2-liter engine with 224 hp to the GLB 35, for the AMG has tuned the 2.0-liter engine to 306 hp. The consumption values are on the one hand significantly lower than those of full-blown SUV models, but Mercedes wants the GLB soon completely turn off the fuel tap: In just over a year to drive the purely electric model EQB.

We will not forget that. The good feeling that sets in at the wheel. The longer you are on the road with the GLB, the more likely you believe the Mercedes planners, who see in the compact SUV the next bestseller of the brand. Because the GLB does not only convince with variability and inner values. But above all, he is so cleverly placed between the worlds that no one in this car needs to be ashamed: Not as stuffy as a van, and too sensible for a SUV.
