Datenleck: Data from millions of Mixcloud users offered for sale

2019-12-02T11:50:15.875Z

Hackers apparently managed to tap data from millions of users of the audio streaming platform Mixcloud. The loot is now available for purchase in the Dark Web.

According to a media report, there was a data leak on the Mixcloud audio platform. "TechCrunch" recently became aware that someone offered to buy data from allegedly more than 20 million Mixcloud accounts in the Dark Web. The provider had asked for the record 4000 dollars. According to the Tech Magazine, an extract of the data has been made available for review.

According to "TechCrunch", this Mixcloud data packet contained, among other things, user names, e-mail and IP addresses as well as passwords, but the latter only in encrypted form. Likewise, the suspected Mixcloud data revealed when users logged on to the platform and when they last logged in.

"TechCrunch" managed to verify the authenticity of the data at least a little bit. For this purpose, the editors have entered some e-mail addresses from the data set provided to them into the log-in mask of the Mixcloud page. Since the site at their known e-mail addresses specifically identifies the error that you have entered the wrong password, can be determined in this way even with dummy passwords, whether an address is registered with Mixcloud or not.

For security change the password

One day after the publication of the "TechCrunch" article, Mixcloud also commented on the topic on Saturday. The company said it had received "credible reports" that hackers had sought and received "unauthorized access to some of our systems": "In our current understanding, this case concerns email addresses and IP addresses as well as a minority of Mixcloud users securely encrypted passwords. "

The majority of its users signed in via Facebook authentication, Mixcloud said: "In this case, we do not store passwords." Also credit card numbers or postal addresses of users would not be saved. Regarding the magnitude of the data leak, the company did not provide any information.

Although the platform's passwords are cryptographically secured according to Mixcloud and are therefore very hard to crack, the service advises users to change their password as a precaution - especially if the same password is also used on other sites. The incident is now under investigation, writes Mixcloud further: We apologize to those affected and regret that this has happened. "

MixCloud, which understands itself as a "global community for audio culture", specializes in content such as radio broadcasts, podcasts and DJ mixes. "With Mixcloud you will find the best radio stations in the world," says the advertising text for the Android app: "Listen to music and talk radio stations from our community over half a million DJs, radio stations, radio hosts and music trendsetters."
