The new Renault Capchore marks a significant leap compared to the previous generation. Is it enough to capture the Israeli customer?
A million and a half units of the previous Kaptor were sold around the world. For Renault, it's a success story, a hit. In Israel, anemic design, borderline comfort and unmatched finishes have prevented the previous leaflets from achieving similar success in Israel. Now, with the new generation, World Brno hopes to continue the success story, and with the local importer to start it.
What's new?
The new Renault Capchore uses the Cleo platform introduced several months ago. The design, leapfrogged and the leapfrog show a more powerful and more correct look for this category. According to Renault, much of the attention in model development has been given to the passenger compartment. Beyond pleasing materials and more meticulous construction, one can also find a technological aroma here, with a huge multimedia screen perpendicular to the center of the console, a digital watch board and also with unique elements like the automatic transmission floating shaft.

The Kapchor is being offered overseas with a range of propulsion options with a hybrid version expected to be introduced in the near future as well. Israel is particularly relevant to the 1.3L version (130 hp) combined with a dual-clutch box with 7 transfer ratios. The new platform also enables Capchor to demonstrate an arsenal of advanced safety systems including adaptive cruise control and center-lane control.

Unfortunately, the most relevant paddle version for the Israeli market has not stabilized for the global launch. Instead, we drove the more powerful version of the engine with 154 hp. On this motorway he felt quite fleshy despite a slight delay in the pedal. The dual clutch gearbox prevents it from showing to its full capacity - the transfer ratios are quite long and the action favors the smooth and slow side of the scale.
Significant improvement in ride comfort is good for dozens of previous-generation counters, despite 18-inch rims and low-cut tires in the car we drove. It is not perfect yet, with broken roads at low speeds disrupting the passenger compartment. When it comes to road behavior, the Kapchor displayed indifference to provocation and excellent stability. Despite the light steering wheel and elastic feel, the end result is mature and confident.
Brake operation is good and consistent Although, puzzlingly, Renault still equips the Kapchor with a drum brake at the back. The passenger compartment moves and feels meticulous as promised. We did not like the floating console that steals a bit of space from the driver's lap. The roof window also makes the headspace border for tall people. But at the end of the day, it's a place that compliments the driver and does well.
The Bottom Line
In Israeli eyes, the captor is far more attractive in its recent incarnation. Whether it's the look, the passenger compartment, the comfort enhancement or the safety equipment list, the Renault Capchore presents an original French interpretation and an impressive little recreational vehicle term. That means it fits into the top of this category and does without giving up the French chic.
