Just before changing the taxation method in Europe that will wean the world from the black gold, DS launched two green models in parallel: the DS3 Electric Crossback and the DS7 Crossback Plug-in. We jumped to Paris for a first taste

It may not have paid enough attention to that, but last March the countdown clock for World Weaning was turned off. The European Parliament has set a new threshold for pollutant emissions: 95 grams per km compared to 130 now. A manufacturer by January 2020 will exceed the new threshold, expected to be fined for each vehicle - fines that can accumulate tens and hundreds of millions of dollars and bury brands.

This earthquake shocked the automobile world. Suddenly everyone needs an electric vehicle or at least a hybrid hugging light trees to balance the average emissions.

Changing world order, chaos, and panic among some car makers have made me sit down on the keyboard to elaborate on the steps that led to the development of electric energy storage technology, how to make it more efficient, cheaper and more accessible, how to reduce the steps of those who pollute on the roads, and more liberal with those who emit At heights (power plants, industrial, etc.). But since already in the first paragraph I had put myself to sleep, I deleted everything and my fingers had to recalculate everything.

Everyone is starting to argue in March for January 2020

So let's start as big as possible. Most of the world is divided into two divisions: those who see electric models as separate models, such as the Volkswagen and Toyota group, and those who consider the electric / hybrid power unit as another engine type from the existing gasoline and diesel supply. Not a dedicated electric car, but if a car sells with another engine selection option, at least until the electricity remains the only choice on the shelf, or next to the next hot thing. One such is the PSA group and its last two models are an example of this: the DS3 Electric Crossback and the DS7 CrossBack Hybrid Rechargeable Sediment (PHEV), which share almost everything with their petrol / diesel versions.

Like most electric cars, speeding up to 50-60 mph, the sequel is less powerful

In the case of the DS3 Crossback this is a small crossover that competes in the category of Audi Q2 for example. It uses the new CMP platform - just like the "regular" version that was the first to use. This modular platform is pre-designed to also contain electric propulsion, so the supply of electric models is expected to expand with every other model based on this platform, such as the electric 208 we tasted two months ago. The electric version is completely identical to the "regular" versions.

This is true of the exterior carvings, interior curves for most assemblages, and the fixture list. So where are the differences? First in the existence of batteries. The DS3 Electric Crossback has a thium-ion battery with 216 cells in 12 enclosures (so they can be replaced individually) housed under the front seats and under the back seat (instead of the fuel tank). The battery packs and other electrical assemblies have led to a change in the rear rack geometry that can affect comfort and behavior. And there are also some other differences such as the lack of space for the replacement wheel (there is a weighting kit), the lack of space for electric motors for tuning the front seats and the lack of space for the subwoofer attached to the high quality 'Pokel' audio system. According to DS personnel, until the model comes to production, the electric motors for the front seats and subwoofer will be found.

Completely identical to the petrol version in the exterior

As an initial sign of the lack of the finest audio system I was used to, I turned it off completely and listened to the quiet soundtrack that accompanies every electric car. Because the lack of a gasoline engine or a grumbling diesel or a waverz, most often exposes other noises. Electrical systems whine, through the bellows of the air conditioning system and into road and road noises. I listened, listened, and found that the DS3 electric was very convincing. No simple matter in a relatively small vehicle.

Another challenging issue is the convenience of travel. Because electric or not, there are the values of the French brand, which has to deal with an extra weight of 320 kg. Both the addition and the desire to maintain a trunk volume identical to the normal version, the rear rack is different. The result is soft racks with a long move and operation They are not perfect, especially at slow speeds, but overall they work well and together with the successful insulation they get very good ride quality.

To reinforce the message that an electric or hybrid engine is just another power source, both the DS3 and DS7 hybrid versions have been dubbed E-TENSE

The added weight and location of the batteries also changed and lowered the center of gravity of the car compared to a standard DS3, so in practice the electric version offers better dynamic capabilities and maybe even higher than those of the gasoline version sold in the country.

Prevent 136 hp and 26.5 kgs, and since they've been achieved right from the start, they get excellent performance with an official 9-second acceleration from 0-100 km / h. There are also 3 driving modes that affect engine response ('Throttle' "," Standard "and" Sport "), and the braking system has 2 regenerative loading modes. The base provides relatively moderate braking, with the" B "offering more powerful engine braking and higher-speed battery charging. The use of the brake pedal. The total speed of the electric DS3 provides what is needed for bypassing or braking when the brake pedal operation is pleasantly surprising with a proper feel for pressing.

Here, too, the hostile motif rules everywhere. The quality level is very high. The systems' operation is less intuitive

The 5 degrees that prevailed at that day's peak in the suburbs of Paris did not convince me to give up the air conditioner. The air conditioner is a proven energy stealer and to simulate real life in Israel, I froze the passenger space after plunging into a thermal vest, sweater, coat and sock cap. Frozen and pleasant, I went on a road trip organized mainly in rural and urban areas. Those that require more energy because of speed and also do not really allow energy storage due to little use of brakes. At the intermediate station, one of the DS engineers told me that because there was no internal combustion engine as a heat source, a heating pump for the passenger compartment was added in the electric version. So that way back I already did with a swimsuit and flip flops while I roast to know. According to the same air conditioner engineer or the heating pump will consume about 10% of the battery energy. This delivers 50 kW / hour, and a declared range of 320 km (the stricter WLTP standard). Home charging time is 7.5 hours and a fast (100KW) status to 80% of the battery in 35 minutes - half the time required for the Mini Cooper SE (Tram).

My route took 100 km total. Not much for such a test, which at the end of the battery gauge showed that a further 55% of the energy would be sufficient for a trip of more than 120 km given that I would continue in the same semi-calm nature. Even if we add 10% because of the use of the air conditioner / heating system, we will reach a true maximum range of About 250 km - which is more than satisfactory, but shorter than stated. DS officials explained that the car was still in calibration stages, and that the current range was a pessimistic distance that could actually be made.

DS7 Crossback plug-in

It is currently the largest, most expensive and prestigious model in the range of brand models. It is also based on a familiar platform. The EMP2 platform that already serves Peugeot 3008/5008 and others. This platform cannot receive electric propulsion alone but only a hybrid configuration. Here, too, the exteriors, the interior sculptures and the accessory list are the same as the "regular" versions.

Slightly confusing DS gave the same nickname, E-TENSE, to both the DS3 electric version and the DS7 hybrid, instead of separating electricity, and the hybrid. The reason for their claim is the desire to create uniqueness for the brand's "green" models, no matter what the source of the paddle.

The very dual paddle listed the ability to lower the power to the wheels. And especially when the car was dealing with wet grass and slippery mud when it was locked in road tires

The DS7 Crossback plug-in combines a 1.6-liter turbo-petrol engine, 8-speed gearbox, and a pair of electric motors, one for each axle, which are almost identical, while the torque output is significantly different. Taken together, this business generates 300 hp and dual propulsion, and also allows for 58km travel on electricity alone. The batteries are arranged in a different arrangement than the electric DS3, and in fewer enclosures, among other things, at the expense of the 43-liter fuel tank (compared to 55 in gasoline / diesel). And as with the electric DS3, this whole business does not compromise trunk volume, but dictates different geometry to the rear rack, and increases overall weight. Here at 190kg in relation to diesel.

Sailed 32 km in electric power before moving to function as a regular hybrid. Consumption was 17.2 km per liter

Trampling of the pedal and the DS7 Crossback plug-in was fired from the scene. It is not as if it is asphalt, as it gives a linear sense of power, mainly because the electric motors continue to push even when shifting gears. There is power, and a lot, all the time. The 8-speed gearbox is not fast in lowering gears, but it is smooth and relaxed.

Unintentionally the rainy days that accompanied the days of launch, wetted the easy pre-planned runway on an agricultural farm. The wet grass and mud created threatened to halt progress as the area's slope increased, but DS men managed to take advantage of the situation to their advantage and emphasized the dual propulsion that allowed progress despite the obvious road tires.

The passenger compartment is the same as the regular petrol and diesel versions, with the same good materials and fine finish and the same quirks

As someone who has regretted the quality of the ride, the DS7 Crossback Plug-in is offered with adaptive racks that also use a camera that scans the road (between 5 and 135 mph) with the aim of repairing the pavement damage. The result is very impressive, with excellent ride comfort and isolation Crossover noise is definitely noticeable when pushed to the edge, and even then the capabilities are very high.

The DS7 Crossback Plug-in accumulates 13.2 kW / hour that provides an official electric range of 58 km. In practice and with an air conditioner I achieve 32 km on electricity only. The sequel was already with little help from the accumulators, and yet the average consumption over 138 km (including the distance made on electricity only) was 17.2 km per liter. Not bad at all. The duration of charging from a home outlet will take 8 hours (8 amps), and two hours from a fast charging position (32 amps).

With these two versions, DS is starting a new era. Electricity period. In this game she will almost play alone and the primaries in the field have a clear advantage. The DS3 Crossback is expected to be the first electric crossover in the category, with the DS7 Crossback plug-in already having two competitors in mind: the Volvo XC40 in the T5 Twin Engine marketed in Europe already started, and the BMW xDrive25e (plug-in) marketed in Europe to begin in 2020 .

These DS models are free from adaptations that require adaptation, such as central console power windows, slightly cumbersome operation of the multimedia interface, and others mentioned in the tests we took for the "standard" models. But for the customer who is looking for a unique and unique model, or the customer who wants to be extra "green", are not only the only options, but very good options for themselves. With us in the second half of 2020.
