About two years ago we compared Chevrolet Equinox to Hyundai Tucson and Volkswagen Tiguan, and were surprised to find ourselves awarding the victory to the new immigrant from America - with an enthusiastic appeal to the UMI importer: "Bring us Equinox with active safety systems!" ... In the past two years, all safety systems have become standard Israeli, and here we have Equinox with almost complete safety specifications; There is autonomous braking, there is a lane guard, there is a warning about approaching the vehicle in front, and identifying vehicles in dead terrain. Bingo! Equinox does not yet have an adaptive cruise control, but we consider this system a matter of convenience, not safety.

The specifications dilemma

The three importers offer plenty of levels of commissioning and finishing, making it difficult to select a specific model for buying or testing; Sportage's price range ranges from NIS 148,000 to NIS 170,000. Equinox will cost you NIS 150,000 or NIS 170,000, and you will receive $ 300,000 to NIS 153,000 in 2008.

We tested the Equinox LT-Plus, the most equipped version of the Chevrolet shelves. For NIS 165,000, we got a dedicated 1.5 liter engine that delivers 170 hp, with a 4.65 centimeter-wide compartment; we don't buy cars by the meter, but the interior is an important parameter for a family that has long-limbed children. NIS 170,000 and 177 horsepower. The 2008 was tested for premium 1.6 turbo 180 kW, costing NIS 187,000.

The Chevrolet Equinox American is big and luxurious. The carriage is nice to the eye but not invested in the details

The truth is that we wanted to test 3008 1.6 'active' costing only NIS 168,000, but Peugeot does not have such a test vehicle; And anyway, the demand for the cheap model of 1.6 is relatively low, because anyone who already buys a powerful engine is also willing to pay the higher price, and get a full accessory (and more sophisticated safety systems). Because, therefore, you choose the motorization and the accessory according to your budget and preferences, but we emphasize that this choice has little effect on the main comparisons we make today - agility, comfort, visibility and feeling, internal space and so on.

Peugeot 3008 carved and checkered, still very impressive. Highly sought after in the used market

An eye sight

For each of his tastes, and you don't need me to decide which crossover is more beautiful. The common opinion of most examiners was that sportage could not win the crown of beauty; He is a little bulbous and the eye has already seen seven of his familiar chariot, one of tens of thousands already roaming in Israel. The sports car is carved and invested, but that's not enough.

The very beautiful equinox, carved in elegant but not introverted lines, is also the largest among the three. The rear is reminiscent of the Mercedes GLE but on the other hand, its carriage is a bit simplistic in appearance; There is no substantial investment in details, car folds or chrome decorations requested in this extroverted category. Take, for example, the plastic belt between the front and rear wheels - the Kia is decorated with a chrome strip, the Peugeot is carved and decorated, the Chevrolet is simple and straightforward-looking, as if they did not finish the design ...

Kia Sportage is a proven sales hit in Israel, dominating the course currents market for several years

Equinox also does not have any wheelbarrows, it does not give the feeling of design to the end. If the Aquinox came in a bright crimson color it would give him credit but in the end, the 2008 is still, the original and the special among the three chariots. The stylus is a bit exaggerated for my taste but everything else is great-looking - well-designed, tastefully decorated, replete with rich details.

Cabin

Here, too, oversimplification hurts the Chevy. He is the only one with no sunroof test (but he is also the cheapest), his interior design features large surfaces of dull black plastic. It's not 'wrong', but the Equinox passenger compartment is less impressive than the other two. On the other hand, it is the most spacious cell of the three - it is not wider than the others, but it is longer. The front seats are comfortable, there is more space in the back seat and seating for all passengers is higher than usual, which is very nice.

The Equinox is spacious and ergonomic, but design is not brilliant, the raw materials are simplistic in appearance and touch

The three cargo compartments are quite extensive; 466 liters for sportage, 520 liters for 2008, and slightly more than two in Equinox (the official 846 liter figure comes from a different but still larger, American trunk measurement method). Equinox's detailed 8-inch multimedia display allows you to connect two phones, an excellent sound system and a remote air conditioner, useful for summer days. On behalf of the importer UMI, we were told that in early 2020, Equinox will be upgraded to an upgraded finish with leather upholstery, open roof and more.

The sportage is high quality, well equipped and well finished. The design is very conservative

Comparative: Sportage, Equinox, 3008 (Photo: Dudi Moskowitz, Rami Gilboa)

The Sportage passenger compartment is very invested, it has an extensive sunroof and pleasant beige upholstery, all that is needed. But the interior design is devoid of flying, the multimedia screen and sound system are not impressive, the materials are quality but without inspiration and creativity. The interior space is inferior to that of the Equinox, though not significantly so. Kia's high waistline leaves a bit of window space, the feeling less pleasant, certainly if you're not a full-size adult. The console is packed with mechanical switches.

The 2008 is spectacular and impressive, very comfortable. Multimedia systems operate less well than others

Comparative: Sportage, Equinox, 3008 (Photo: Dudi Moskowitz, Rami Gilboa)

The 3008 passenger compartment is still, the most invested and creative of the three; I'm not in love with the French i-Cockpit configuration, certainly not on the small, small steering wheel on either side. But customers are dying at this wheel, and I love its multi-storey structure. Four years after its introduction, Peugeot’s passenger compartment is still eye-catching and fingers-crossed, featuring creative and unique upholstery. The test version came in gray padding, a central cooled compartment, a wireless charging surface - some of these items don't come in the cheaper versions. The center console is carved in aluminum and impressive in appearance, though it features the least comfortable multimedia system in the test; Although 'piano switches' require adjustment and excessive menus, here the French have gone one step too far. There is also excessive overcrowding of color and unnecessary effects on the dashboard, but still - this is the airy and cozy passenger compartment of the three, and big.

The Pistons Sing

The three competitors are armed with petrol engines, 1.5 liters for Chevrolet (170 kW and 28 kg), 1.6 liters for the other two - 177 kW and 27 kgs for kia, 180 kW and 25.5 kg To Peugeot). The power strip in Peugeot and Kia is lower and more available than that of a Chevrolet, but not in a big gap. Peugeot has 8 gears, 7 for sports, only 6 for Equinox. The Chevy is also the heaviest in the group, 1,673 pounds (versus 1,577 for the Sportage, and 1,505 for the 3008).

In a series of intermediate and intermediate acceleration tests, a consistent but not very great sporting advantage (8.9 seconds from zero to 100) and a modest Peugeot advantage over the Equinox, which fought well for American dignity, was revealed. At cruising speeds, there was no real difference in the performance of the three engines. The Equinox stop / drive system can't be undone, too bad.

The Equinox was the heaviest in the bunch, and that's evident in the performance

I suppose fuel consumption is not a critical component of choosing between the three test vehicles; Those who want or need to save will find their happiness in the diesel versions of Peugeot and Kia, which will save them 25-30 percent of fuel costs. Among the three gasoline engines under test, the French lion was more economical, spending 13-14 miles on fast but unobtrusive intercity driving. Under the same conditions, the Sportage went 11-12 miles per liter, and the Chevrolet 10-11.5 km; that's a pretty good thing considering its smaller engine, 6-speed gearbox and high self-weight.

Through the seals

We did not find any dramatic gaps in competitors' engine performance, but not so in terms of comfort and refinement. Here we found large gaps that can be explained by different choices made by the three manufacturers. In terms of comfort and refinement, the sportage comes in last place. It stiffens and passes all the road disruptions to your building, crashing on asphalt rips that are frequently found on Israeli roads. We have no way of identifying whether the problem stems from the calibration of the overly sporty Hancock 245 / 45R19 tires, perhaps even the quality of the acoustic insulation? In any case, the level of comfort and refinement (NVH) of the sportage is the least good in the test.

Sportage knows how to be fast and furious, the price is less comfortable traveling

Comparative: Sportage, Equinox, 3008 (Photo: Dudi Moskowitz, Rami Gilboa)

The Equinox is no quieter than the sportage, but it is much more comfortable; This is the result of softer suspension calibration but also a 10-inch long wheelbase, large self-weight, and less sporty tires. The inter-urban ride has had the convenience of the Equinox consistent, and it has excelled even more on a disrupted, urban road. The cut 65 tires must have contributed to the softness of the Equinox asphalt tear, at the highest level in the bunch. This crossover is very suitable for the relaxed driver, families who enjoy hiking trails will enjoy the comfort of his trip on Saturday trips as well.

The Equinox is the most comfortable on disrupted asphalt but in the end, the comfort and refinement trophy remains in the hands of the French lion. The 2008 is less comfortable than the Equinox at low speeds but it is excellent for intercity flow, its engine quieter, the acoustic isolation is the best of the bunch, though not in a very large gap.

Equinox does not like extreme driving, but it will satisfy every typical customer

183 words on rubber

The test cars illustrate the jeepony 2020 tire dilemma: Customers demand big rims with low-cut tires, preferably in width to illustrate the adventurous nature of their owners ... On the other hand, the world of crossovers is a world of compromise. These are unnecessarily tall tools, most of them have no sporting pretensions, and the low-cut tires only hurt them - there will never be a wide tire with a lower cut, less noisy, more vulnerable and more expensive to replace.

The eye has a hard time noticing the tire width differences, but they greatly affect the dynamic, comfort and savings capabilities

Comparative: Sportage, Equinox, 3008 (Photo: Dudi Moskowitz, Rami Gilboa)

Kia chose the most fashionable solution among the technology-marketing between designers and engineers; The Korean crossover locks Hancock 9 245 / 45R1 tires too wide (low) and low cut, which greatly impairs the refinement of the ride. Chevrolet opted for a non-fashionable solution, with the Maxis 225 / 65R17 tires. It is evident in the eye that the tire wall is very high, but section 65 helps greatly in mitigating the potholes and quieting the ride. The most original and invested solution is found in 2008's Michelin 205 / 55R19. It is a unique tire that allows you to trim in a very large 19-inch hoop and maintain a visually low 55 cut. The technology trick is to reduce the tire width to just 205 millimeters. Is the 205 too thin a tire? Not at all, he manages to do the job - in the end, it's not cars they take to sharpen their tires. The narrow tire also improves fuel consumption, steering sharpness, and tire noise.

The 2008 gives the most enjoyable compromise, thanks in part to relatively narrow tires

Crossover sporty?

Despite the multitude of compromises built into every crossover, we expect a dash of driving pleasure, even from the test takers ahead of us. Equinox does not excel at the sporting end - the soft racks and high tires do not do a favor with it, nor the relatively high weight. But believe me, he is able to quickly sew Arad-Sodom to 99.9% of his customers, who will never scratch his envelope. Equinox steering is not bad at all, it has good directional stability, and no one expects it to turn around like the RSQ3 audio, for example. The gearbox control switch is strange to operate, until you stop using it, and down the steep cliffs to the Dead Sea the brakes have heated up, it's not the style of driving for the laid-back American.

Comparative: Sportage, Equinox, 3008 (Photo: Dudi Moskowitz, Rami Gilboa)

The sportage feels more comfortable in road games thanks to a beefy engine, dual clutch gearbox, and slightly more durable brakes. The Korean coped well with the twists, his engine pushing hard, the steering a little light to our taste. For the typical client, the dynamic capabilities of the sportage are beyond any reasonable requirement.

The 2008 is not significantly better than the Sportage, but it has something more balanced and flowing. The steering is too light, but it's fine. The racks keep the chassis well balanced (relative to the crossover), and the 205 tires do their job well. In the premium version, the 2008 is equipped with steering gear levers, which assist in downhill braking; How many times will the normal customer use this ability? Once a month, two months? Ever?

Comparative: Sportage, Equinox, 3008 (Photo: Dudi Moskowitz, Rami Gilboa)

We have no ability to test active safety systems but we note that the Peugeot automatic braking system functions up to 140 mph, the Kia and Chevrolet guarantee braking up to 80 mph only. The Chevrolet's lane-keeping system was less good than the other two - the Equinox zigzagged between the white bars and even exceeded the travel lane, more often than its two competitors (neither did 100% of the time, but performed better).

At the foot of the cash register

Kia Sportage is the oldest crossover in the bunch and is by far the undisputed hit of sales here. He instilled a safety makeover in the Israeli automotive market, and even became the best-selling vehicle in our country. The sportage provides a great solution for a high-ranking driver with the perceived marketability and reliability but today's test, he will have to settle for third place - mainly because of the level of comfort and refinement less than his two competitors, and an external design that has already become banal and too common on the roads.

Comparative: Sportage, Equinox, 3008 (Photo: Dudi Moskowitz, Rami Gilboa)

Chevrolet Equinox is not innocent; It lacks investment in details, has limitations and shortcomings that we have detailed. But it is very spacious, looks good, offers the best multimedia on the test, and most importantly - it is the most comfortable vehicle in the group, for everyday driving in Israel. Equinox is also the cheapest vehicle in the test, so it wins us second place.

Comparative: Sportage, Equinox, 3008 (Photo: Dudi Moskowitz, Rami Gilboa)

Which leaves the first place for 2008 which is also the most expensive vehicle here, and a significant gap; NIS 187,000 versus 170,000 for sports, and 165,000 for Equinox. If you want to buy 3008 at a lower price, you will have to give up not only accessories, but also some of the safety systems. But either way, the 2008 remains majestic and high quality, its design exceptionally good, the comfort of the ride excellent, and it has the finest passenger compartment on the test. Throughout its four years in Israel, the 2008 has established itself as a highly marketable vehicle in the used market, thanks to its improved qualities and reliability. It turns out that the French lion still rules the dome.

As usual, thank you so much to Uncle Moskowitz from https://www.dudpro.com/ for the time and photos. More of his works can be found on his website at the attached link.
