In just over a year is a big duel: Sony brings its Playstation 5 on the market - and Microsoft stops with a new Xbox against. As you know now, the Microsoft device will be named Xbox Series X. The group announced on Thursday evening at the Game Awards, an awards ceremony in Los Angeles. So far, the game console was known only under the project name Scarlett.
In addition to the final name revealed Xbox boss Phil Spencer at the show more details. In a video Spencer showed for the first time what the device will look like. The design is completely different from the previous Xbox One. Instead of the flat box, the Xbox Series X looks like the tower case of a desktop PC. Players will also be able to lay the device flat, as Microsoft tells.
Based on a press photo showing a controller next to the Xbox Series X, the tower is about 15 inches wide and 40 inches high. The coarse-meshed ventilation grille on the top is reminiscent of the hole pattern that's been used on the Xbox One S, a more powerful version of the Xbox One.
The controller is similar to the previous Xbox One controller. However, Microsoft has added an extra button to make it easier for the player to record short game scenes and screenshots and share them with friends. In addition, the control pad should have been revised. The controller should be backward compatible, which means it will work with the Xbox One as well. In addition, the controller should be connected to a Windows 10 PC.
8K resolution should be at least theoretically possible
The Xbox Series X should provide a resolution of up to 8K, but this is probably more of a theoretical value, in which the processor should reach its limits. Microsoft also advertises with more realistic values such as a 4K resolution with 60 frames per second, and 120 pictures should also be possible. Televisions should also be controlled with HDMI 2.1 features such as variable refresh rate (VRR) and automatically reduced latency (ALLM).
The games are stored on an SSD, while a Zen-2 processor from AMD calculates the images. Also a disc drive can be recognized in the photos. An Xbox spokesman told the SPIEGEL that there is still no information as to whether it is a slot for Ultra HD Blu-rays or any other format.
The Xbox Series X should be at a similar time as the Playstation 5 in stores - in time for the Christmas business next year. An exact date, however, does not exist, according to the spokesman. Among the first games for the device to include, among others, the exclusive first-person shooter "Halo: Infinite" and the action adventure "Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2".
