"Shoint", the cyber-policeman caught in the web of Darknet

2020-01-22T05:49:01.650Z

For selling confidential information and offering other illegal activities, a specialized gendarme has been under investigation for

He was nicknamed "Shoint" on the Darknet. A provocative reference for those who know the mysteries of the gendarmerie. To the letter, it is indeed the acronym of a training program dedicated to cyber-investigators that he masters at his fingertips. Behind the pseudonym hid Christophe P., a warrant officer in his forties.

Until January 1, 2020, this gendarme was still administratively part of the staff of the very prestigious Center for Combating Digital Crime (C3n), a department responsible for the most complex computer investigations: large-scale hacks, mass 2.0 scams, etc.

Fallen, the non-commissioned officer has just resigned from the gendarmerie after being suspended from his duties following his indictment on June 21, 2019. He is suspected of having sold his professional conscience on the Darknet, the slope hidden and unregulated internet, by selling sensitive information there. To the point of slowing down the judicial investigations for which he was responsible!

"A brilliant and unsuspected investigator"

Justice accuses Christophe P. of a litany of offenses: “embezzlement of computer files”, “disclosure of confidential data”, “aggravated obstruction of judicial investigations”, “influence peddling”, “criminal association”… Locked up, he was released under judicial supervision on October 9. "He was a technically brilliant and unsuspected investigator," said a former colleague.

After "Haurus", the police officer ripou from the DGSI, here is "Shoint", his counterpart among the pandores: a specialized investigator who succumbed to the sirens of easy money. Two rare cases which raise the question of the internal control of these elite services. The two men did not know each other but sold their services on the same obscure site: "FrenchDeepweb". Until it was dismantled in June 2019, there were weapons, drugs, false papers ...

While tracking "Haurus", the investigators of the Central Office for the Suppression of Irregular Immigration and the Employment of Untitled Foreigners (Ocriest) come across "Shoint". On January 15, 2019, they arrested a customer common to the two merchants: Johan K., alias "JojodelaVegas". This 34-year-old unemployed man is a historical counterfeiter, specializing in false driver's licenses and counterfeit gray cards.

In messages, investigators discover that "Shoint" identified the owners of two license plates at the request of a forger.

To make realistic documents, he usurps the identity of real people. Hence his purchases of confidential information taken from police files from the DGSI police officer. In custody, Johan K. confesses and drops a new bomb: "Another individual has positioned himself on this market and contacted me". It is the mysterious "Shoint". In exhumed messages, investigators discover that he identified the owners of two license plates at the request of the forger.

"Cyberpression" for the modest sum of 50 euros

However, by examining the file of the police, they note that only one gendarme was able to carry out these searches for plaques: Christophe P., adjutant at C3n, domiciled in Pontoise (Val-d'Oise). Is it an undercover agent infiltrating the Darknet? Or a ripou? Repeated searches leave little doubt. Just like the range of services offered in his virtual store opened in June 2018. In addition to the disclosure of private information, the gendarme offers a "Cyberpression" service ... for the modest sum of 50 euros! " Revenge ?? Want to crack a colleague under pressure? You will get rid of your rival without getting your hands dirty, ”he wrote in presentation.

More worryingly, this same "Shoint" also offers physical monitoring of "husband, wife, boyfriend, boss" for 350 euros, with the addition of "real time" results. Or… “discreet deliveries of drugs and other goods” using a “go-anywhere vehicle”. The investigators immediately thought of a gendarmerie car. "I have certain free time slots," said the non-commissioned officer. While issuing certain conditions: "weight limited to 100 kg max. No body or morbid thing (sic) ”. To cover himself, the gendarme claims to have "reliable relationships", "although not too attentive as to their morality".

"Shoint" also offered physical surveillance of "husband, wife, boyfriend, boss" for 350 euros.

The General Inspectorate of the National Gendarmerie (IGGN) was then seized by the Pontoise prosecution. On June 21, Christophe P. was arrested at his workplace. In police custody, the soldier collapsed. "He quickly recognizes the facts, explaining that he drifted because of money problems related to a divorce," said a close to the investigation. The IGGN gendarmes make a disturbing discovery: certain sensitive investigations entrusted to the adjutant were allegedly sabotaged. However, he was investigating blackmailers from Eastern Europe. Would it have drifted to the point of pacting with its targets?
