The veteran Mitsubishi ASX gets a significant facelift and comes here. First Driving

The Mitsubishi ASX is based on a fairly old platform. He recently received a deep facelift, one that should improve his ability and fill the company's range of leisure vehicles with a fresh face. The ASX is part of the response that Mitsubishi gives to the Jeepones fashion and is the entry level into the leisure world of Mitsubishi, with the Eclipse-Cross and the Outlander above.

This trio dominates the price range most relevant to the Israeli public. According to the 2019 dedication summary, where Mitsubishi jumped into fifth place in the Israeli car market (second only to Toyota among the Japanese), this strategy works.

What's new?

As mentioned, the ASX is set to integrate with the Mitsubishi Leisure Model family. And this facelift gives him the familiar facade of the other models in the family. The result of the front and back changes is quite successful and gives the ASX a fresh scent. The long wheelbase and the small excess wheels also contribute in this respect. The ASX also gets the latest 2.0 l (150 kW) engine introduced in the Outlander. The new turbocharged engine from the Eclipse didn't come here, but the latest generation of the Continuous Box did.

Inside, the Mitsubishi passenger compartment guarantees improved material quality along with lightweight design touches (in the center console). The test car (premium finish level costing NIS 148,000) seats with integrated leather upholstery contributed to an improved feeling in the cabin. At all finishing levels, a new generation can be found for the local multimedia system, with the option of voice operation in Hebrew. There is also LED lighting up front. The list of advanced safety systems includes autonomous braking, dimming of lights and warning of deviation from the lane (without active correction). The premium version being tested also adds a warning about vehicles in the dead and driving back.

on the road

Entering the passenger compartment in this version the feeling is mixed. On the one hand, the upholstery said here adds, the great accessory also contributes to the good feeling. Although the materials are mostly good and the composition is excellent the overall design feels a bit outdated. The front spacing is excellent and the chairs were comfortable despite a short base. Behind the situation is similar when only the headspace will not fit high graduates. The trunk offers medium volume (416 L) with a wide loading opening even if a little high. The ace here is the accessory, whether it's climate control, the big window in the roof, or the big multimedia screen, these and much more enhance the feel of the cabin.

The paddle unit is new for the ASX but feels quite familiar. The performance produced by the combination of the gasoline engine and the continuous box is good overall, but their manner of presentation is not always eloquent. The leap from the scene is a bit tentative but from there the reactions, for example intermediate accelerations, are very good. Administrative driving keeps RPM low and feels at ease. But summing up full performance will keep the rpm needle high and even if the growling sound is distant, it still produces a busy and unrefined feeling. The average fuel consumption during the test days was 12.4 km / l - a good figure given the nature of the trip. We should also note that, on a leisurely inter-city ride, the engine is fairly quiet but there was a presence of road noise and wind.

Still on the highway at legal speed, the ride on the ASX feels pleasant, absorbing and even somewhat restrained. Inside the city the feeling is very solid and the absorption is not satisfactory on sharp potholes at slow speed. The big rims with low-cut tires don't contribute here. Beyond that, the ASX introduces mature, if not exciting, road customs. The steering wheel is accurate and displays good weight in the genre. There is a noticeable rolling angle in turns under load and at the end of the grip limits, an easy to control sub-steering reveals. In slow turns the steering wheel was felt when the full power of the engine was sent to the front wheels.

The Bottom Line

The ASX gets a smart list of updates that keeps it relevant. Nothing is said about the basic capability of this platform, but the proposed value. The ASX simply offers similar dimensions and fittings to the familiar compact leisure vehicles, at a lower cost and more accessible.
