The electrical turnaround of the Swedish company Volvo starts from Milan. As well as for the reveal of the thermal version, the new electric XC40 was also presented in European preview at the Volvo Studio of the Lombard capital, specially set up in shades of pink, a color chosen to highlight the ability of the Swedish brand to take care of the environment, but also and above all of the safety of people.

The compact SUV XC40 Recharge P8 is the first full electric vehicle from the house of Gothenburg and is part of the brand strategy that from 2019 announced the electrification of its entire range, with mild hybrid, plug in hybrid and full electric cars, this the last category will grow further by 2021 with the arrival of four other models (two Volvo models and two Polestar). The goal is to be able to introduce, in the next five years, a fully electric car every year, reaching 50% of the share of electric-only cars out of total global sales by 2025, with the remainder made up of hybrid vehicles. Like the XC40, the XC40 Recharge P8 was built on the basis of Compact Modular Architecture (CMA), an advanced vehicle platform that is the result of joint development work within the Geely Group.

Inside the car, the XC40 Recharge P8 does not save on space thanks to numerous areas intended for stowage, which can also be found under the front hood, where instead of the 'old' thermal engine a large compartment has been created glove. The XC40 Recharge P8 is powered by a highly advanced all-wheel drive electric engine which guarantees a range of over 400 km on one charge, according to the WLTP approval cycle, and delivers a power of 408 HP. The battery can be recharged to 80% of its capacity in 40 minutes using a quick charge device.

The battery is protected by a safety 'cage' formed by an extruded aluminum frame that has been placed in the center of the bodywork, creating a deformable area around the battery itself. The central position of the battery in the vehicle floor also has the advantage of lowering the center of gravity and offering greater protection to passengers in the event of overturning. In the rear section, the electric engine has been integrated into the body structure to improve the distribution of impact forces away from the passenger compartment in the event of an impact.

But the real news is not just about zero emission propulsion: the new XC40 Recharge is in fact the first Volvo model to be equipped with a brand new infotainment system based on Google's Android operating system.

The new infotainment system offers customers various customization options, an optimized level of intuitiveness, the new integrated Google technology and services such as Google Assistant, Google Maps and Google Play Store.

It is also the first Volvo capable of receiving software and operating system updates in OTA (over the air) mode, thus placing the brand at the forefront in the area of connected automotive services.

In terms of safety, the engineers of the Swedish company had to redesign and reinforce the front section of the XC40 Recharge P8 to overcome the absence of the engine, so as to meet Volvo Cars' high safety requirements and guarantee passengers a level of protection equal to that of any other Volvo model.

The XC40 Recharge P8 is also the first Volvo model equipped with the new scalable platform of sensors Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) with software developed by Zenuity, the joint venture of Volvo Cars and Veoneer.

Waiting to see it in Italy at the end of this year (the attack price should be around 59,600 euros), in some markets Volvo Cars has officially opened the order campaign already finding the interest of tens of thousands of consumers.
