In 2019 the prices of new cars in Italy increased on average by 2.5% compared to 2018 while there was a decrease in the prices of used cars which saw a drop in prices of 2.7%. Again with reference to 2019, prices for car assistance services are modestly growing (+ 1.5%). This is the picture that emerges from an elaboration of the Istat consumer price indices for the entire community created by the Autopromotec Observatory.
In detail, the increase in the prices of new cars is a phenomenon that has been going on for some time now.
In 2017, in fact, the price indicator for new cars already recorded an average increase of 0.9% on the previous year. Prices then further increased in 2018 (+ 1.9% on 2017) and also in 2019 (+ 2.5% on 2018). According to the Observatory, the exponential increase in the prices of new cars in recent years is justified by the tendency of car manufacturers to offer increasingly sophisticated technologies, content and software on board cars.
An opposite dynamic, however, concerned the used car market, whose prices have suffered a series of decreases in recent years (-2.6% in 2017, -3.3% in 2018, -2.7% in 2019) mainly due to the demonization of diesel. This phenomenon has in fact led to a slowdown by motorists in the decision to replace old diesel cars, with the inevitable effect of devaluing used cars with this type of engine.
Lastly, greater stability has characterized the car assistance services sector. Prices in 2019 showed a modest trend increase (+ 1.5%), in line with the increases of previous years. Going into the details of the individual expense items, only that relating to maintenance and repair showed a slightly more marked increase (+ 1.6%). On the other hand, the prices of lubricants (+ 0.9%) and spare parts and accessories (+ 0.4%) increased, while those of tires remained unchanged.
