On the front line, there are the respiratory symptoms of coronavirus infection. But behind the scenes, the impact of the virus is palpable on other vital organs. Only the brain seems to be spared, although damage to the olfactory nerve (smell) is often described.
On March 14, in the journal Liver International , researchers from the Wuhan University of Science and Technology, in collaboration with the Virology Institute in Essen (Germany), reported liver damage that could be caused by the coronavirus . "They may have been caused by Sars-CoV-2 infection or by the drugs used to treat it," they write. "An elevation of liver enzymes is possible in infected patients, but the mechanism remains uncertain, either by direct cytotoxic effect (destroying the cell, NDLR) or by the immune reaction generated by the virus" , adds Pr Sébastien Dharancy (hepatology transplantation , Lille CHRU).
