Electrified Audi A8: The hybrid version has that much range

Audi has now electrified its flagship. Just two years after the presentation, the plug-in hybrid version was recently launched. The A8 L 60 TFSI e quattro is to drive up to 46 kilometers fully electrically . Not much for a long-distance vehicle, but at least. This is ensured by a 14.1 kWh electric motor that delivers 100 kW (136 hp) and 350 Nm of torque. The overall range is of course much larger. Around 700 kilometers . The well-known three-liter V6 from the A8 55 TFSI is on board as the second drive. The petrol engine also produces 340 hp and 500 Nm torque in the hybrid. Together they have a system output of 449 hp and 700 Nm - which is available at least for a short time. We tested the top 110,000 euro model.

What do the driving modes of the Audi A8 offer?

After starting the engine using the familiar button in the center console, the electric motor that is located under the luggage compartment floor starts up. The car basically slides away silently. The driver can use the " EV softkey " in the lower of the two digital cockpit displays to select two driving modes: "EV" and "Hybrid". In EV mode, the A8 is basically a pure electric car - if the battery is sufficiently charged. In this case, the combustion engine only becomes active when the driver accelerates "too much" because the battery alone cannot provide the power. We got around 40 kilometers with one battery charge . Ideal for the city. For short distances.

But the A8 * L is the ideal travel car. And that's what the hybrid mode is made for, which alternates between the battery and the combustion engine. Silent, unnoticed by the occupants. Practical: If the additional "Hold" mode is activated, the system automatically calculates the battery charge when navigation starts. The battery is not completely discharged due to recuperation and shifting the load point, which means that the last few kilometers in the city can be covered electrically. The A8 can be driven fully electrically at speeds of up to 135 km / h , and the six-cylinder automatically regulates the speed at 250 km / h.

The Audi A8 consumes that in electricity and fuel

Audi gives the fuel consumption of the A8 L 60 TFSI e combined at 2.7 to 2.5 l / 100 km , the power consumption at 21.2 to 20.9 kWh / 100 km and the CO2 emissions at 61 to 57 g / km. We have not quite reached this information. But the values ​​for such a powerful 2.37-tonner are still comparatively remarkable: The pure gasoline consumption - i.e. when the battery is empty - was 9.2 liters. In combination with the battery, i.e. in hybrid mode, at 6.2 liters. Electricity consumption was an impressive 35.25 kWh .

If the battery is empty, it can be fully charged in around six and a half hours using a standard household socket. With the right technology, the battery with a maximum output of 7.4 kW can be completely filled in just under two and a half hours.

Inside of the Audi A8: Luxury and sportiness combined

In terms of driving, the A8 L 60 TFSI e quattro is beyond any (comfort) doubt . With the standard air suspension, the permanent all-wheel drive floats smoothly over bumps and still remains agile thanks to its direct steering. The noise insulation is excellent , and with the powerful gas pressure, the flat colossus shoots from 0 to 100 km / h in less than five seconds. The elegant interior also exudes a perfect mix of luxury and sportiness.

The legroom in the rear is so large that you could sit on the floor. In front of the two wide single seats on the back seat, an illuminated mirror can be folded out of the roof. In the wide center console there is, among other things, a 230 volt power plug, for a laptop for example, with a monitor behind it. Tablets that can be attached to the back of the front seat can be ordered optionally. The discreet interior lighting creates a sophisticated ambience, especially at night. Even the belt plugs have a white shimmering edge. Of course, there are many high-quality technical features on board. Everything is clearly arranged, self-explanatory.

The exterior of the largest electrified Audi differs from the "normal" A8 only by a daytime running light divided into five segments in the front bumper, a chrome clasp in the apron and special 19-inch rims in a 5-arm turbine design. In addition to the long version, the A8 hybrid is also available with a short wheelbase.

Conclusion on the Audi A8 as a hybrid

Driving like on clouds - the sky is also a little electrified. Of course for a select clientele . Whether you want to spend around 13,000 euros more for the A8 hybrid than for the "normal" A8 is up to you.
