Because of the corona virus, people are encouraged to stay at home. But what if the main inspection is due? Are TÜV, Dekra, GTÜ and KÜS open?

  • The exit restrictions due to the corona virus cause uncertainty nationwide.
  • For example, can the car still be shown for the main inspection ?
  • This is what TÜV, Dekra, GTÜ and KÜS say.

In Germany everyone is affected in some way by the measures against the spread of the coronavirus. The exit restrictions, which now apply nationwide, require all citizens to stay at home and avoid contact with other people. Anyone who is on the road needs a good reason. What about the main inspection?

General inspection is due: Is there a risk of overdraft - even during the corona crisis?

In principle, the main inspection * must not be overdrawn. If you exceed the deadline by more than two months, you can expect a penalty of 15 euros . If you are more than four to eight months late, you will be fined 25 euros. Anyone who still does not drive the car to the main inspection afterwards will be fined by the legislature with a fine of 60 euros and a point in Flensburg. But do these regulations still apply during the Corona crisis?

As Vincenzo Lucà from TÜV Süd explains to the German Press Agency, there is still an obligation to check: "As long as the authorities do not order otherwise, we will continue to check," it says.

According to the federal states and the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI), carrying out regular technical examinations serves to improve road safety and is necessary to maintain system-relevant logistics chains .

In general, for example in Bavaria, even in the days of Corona, visiting a car repair shop is a good reason to leave the house - as long as the work cannot be postponed to a later date. Nevertheless, a distance of at least 1.5 meters should be maintained for such an appointment. In addition, customers should contact the inspection organizations to find out whether there are changes in opening times.

However, those who overdue the due date of the main inspection due for more than two months and up to a maximum of four months due to special health care should not currently be fined - the BMVI recommends to the federal states. This emerges from a message from the GTÜ.

Corona virus: This is what the TÜV says about the main inspection

As the TÜV Süd announces on its website, the network of service centers has been restricted to system-relevant test centers with reduced opening times and an emergency staffing. That is why opening times in Bavaria now apply from Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. TÜV Nord asks customers to contact the local TÜV station as soon as possible in order to clarify compliance or agreement on an appointment. Compliance with hygiene regulations and the requirement to keep a distance are top priorities there. According to TÜV Rheinland, most of their test centers are open and offer full services . Exceptions are test centers located in areas with a high risk potential. However, to avoid personal contact, customers should remain in the car in front of the inspection station until an employee approaches them. During the test, they should not be in the test area, but outdoors. Otherwise it is possible to stay in the customer area at a distance of two meters from other waiting people. After the test was over, the result could be discussed with an employee at a distance of two meters. Invoices should be paid cashless if possible.

General examination at Dekra in coronavirus times

Dekra continues to test vehicles even during the corona crisis , as the online portal MOZ writes. For example, the branches in Oranienburg, Potsdam and Berlin continue to offer the main or exhaust gas inspection of vehicles in the various test centers. The Oranienburg branch manager Jens-Peter Schultze advises customers to book appointments in the online calendar on the website to avoid waiting times. Customers are also advised to wait in the car for an employee to come and to keep their distance during the tests.

General examination in times of coronavirus at GTÜ

The Society for Technical Surveillance (GTÜ) also reports that the main inspection can still be carried out in a regulated manner in the current situation and is mandatory for every registered vehicle . More than 750 test centers of the GTÜ partners and a large part of the test bases would therefore be available to the customer largely without restriction.

"Even during the main inspection, the health protection of citizens and employees is in the foreground," said Robert Köstler, spokesman for the GTÜ management. For this reason, the company requests that the hygienic measures and applicable distance regulations be observed when staying at the test center . A prior appointment with the GTÜ partner makes sense and enables a smooth process on site. Current experience shows that a main inspection can currently be completed without long waiting times .

Corona virus: This applies to main examinations at KÜS

"For us, the health of our customers and employees has top priority and comes first. It is also our aim to maintain the test operation in Germany in terms of traffic safety , taking into account all safety measures," said a spokesman for the Saarland surveillance organization Editorial staff. "Our KÜS Service branch, which is responsible, among other things, for occupational safety and occupational medicine, constantly provides our partners with information and tips."
