Paul Frappé: "Patients are afraid of disturbing us or of contaminating themselves"

INTERVIEW - The President of the College of General Medicine and doctor in Saint-Etienne (Loire) notes the disappearance of patients from general practitioners' offices and emergency services.


LE FIGARO. - What is the situation in city offices?

Dr Paul FRAPPÉ. - We have testimonies from colleagues all over France who tell us that there has been a very sharp drop in attendance. And this in regions that are already experiencing the epidemic wave as in those where the virus is not yet very present. Teleconsultation is developing very quickly, but even with these acts the drop in consultations is massive. Our emergency room colleagues observe the same thing. They wonder where the trauma or decompensations of chronic illnesses have gone.

How to explain this phenomenon?

One might think that there are fewer problems "thanks" to containment. But we also feel in our patients a fear of coming for fear of disturbing for nothing or, even more, of contaminating themselves.
