The new traffic regulations for 2020 will come into effect on April 28. Some new street signs will also be introduced with them.

  • New traffic regulations will apply from April 28th.
  • Motorists face higher penalties for offenses, while cyclists should be better protected.
  • Some traffic signs are also new.

The Road Traffic Regulations Amendment (StVO) applies from April 28th. Road users have to be prepared for some changes. Many traffic violations are punished with higher fines  - sometimes even faster with a driving ban than was previously the case. In addition, cyclists have more freedom and should be better protected by the regulations.

As part of the  StVO amendment  , some new street signs will be  introduced to traffic, which everyone should know. You can find out what these are in the following section.

The traffic sign for the ban on overtaking should be known to all drivers. This new street sign is a variation of that. It is explicitly considered a ban on overtaking single-track vehicles . This means that multi-lane vehicles (cars, trucks) are not allowed to overtake motorcycles or bicycles * in sections of the road marked with this traffic sign.

This street sign also serves to protect cyclists. It marks an area that is considered a bicycle zone  . For motorists, this means that from this sign, they can drive at a maximum speed of 30 km / h . In addition, they must neither endanger nor hinder cycling.

Hand on heart: Probably many cyclists have already made use of this regulation - even if it was previously considered a violation. Now turning right at a red traffic light is officially permitted - at least where the green arrow for cyclists  indicates it.

The same traffic sign has also been used for motorists for some time. But there is probably still a lot of ignorance among road users about the green arrow. Because correctly you have to behave like a stop sign  . This means that the vehicle must first stop completely  and, according to road traffic regulations, stop for at least three seconds . Only then can you turn right at a red traffic light, provided that no other road user is endangered. Cyclists should also take the same rules into account.

This traffic sign indicates fast cycle paths regardless of the nature of the road. For example, on sandy roads, it should be made so clear that it is a cycle expressway.

Cars, trucks, bicycles, pedestrians: Most road users have a corresponding symbol  for traffic signs. From now on there is also one for carpooling. However, there are still no areas where these could be used. The same applies to the following traffic sign.

Even car-sharing vehicles  get their own symbol. Among other things, it is to be used in parking areas intended for carsharing cars.
