The new restriction on Wattsap, which allows for only one contact, reduced the transmission of viral messages by 70 percent, the TechCrunch website reports. The change came into effect earlier this month in response to Pike News distribution and misinformation following the spread of the Corona virus around the world.
The news means the new Facebook-owned Watsap restriction is slowing down the spread of viral messages, although people still have the option of manually forwarding messages to multiple people or groups. However, it is impossible to know how many of these messages contain the misinformation that is intended to hold, as opposed to messages whose information is actually important and relevant.
WhatsApp groups can contain up to 256 participants, which means messages can spread quickly among a large number of users. Recently, CNN and other news organizations revealed that the app was used to share information about "drugs" for Corona, along with rumors of a military regime move to monitor curfew in various countries around the world.
Last month, the social network added the ability to check every message or video sent to them by clicking on a magnifying glass icon attached to the message balloon to understand if the information they received came from a reliable source by searching the text on Google.
