  • Finding the right motorcycle tires is not that easy.
  • This could be difficult, especially for beginners.
  • The expert explains what to look for when buying motorcycle tires.

Motorcycle owners need to keep a few things in mind when buying new tires. Because depending on the model and type of motorized two-wheeler, the wheels also differ. You can find out what the experts advise in the following sections.

What should I watch out for when buying motorcycle tires?

Achim Penisch, Michelin expert for product technology motorcycle tires, recommends: " Buying motorcycle tires can be a bit confusing, especially for beginners . Firstly, there are tires with different construction principles such as diagonal or radial design . Radial tires are suitable for the sporty use, diagonal tires are designed for durability and robustness.

On the other hand, there is a special tire for almost every type of motorcycle  . For example, an enduro bike rides on different tires than a cruiser or a sports motorcycle. Depending on the requirements - for example robust for off-road or sporty for the racetrack - the appropriate specialist should be brought up.

There are also personal components . Are you more of a comfortable driver * or do you like to take it sporty? Are you a beginner or a sophisticated professional? This should also be taken into account when choosing tires.

Legal requirements when buying motorcycle tires

Another important aspect when buying tires is the new legal requirements . For all motorcycle tires that have been produced since January 1st , 2020 , new rules of the game apply to the release requirements .

Tire manufacturers now issue two certificates. In the " Service Information ", the original tire sizes or types are listed for motorcycles * with EU type approval. The tires listed here are the recommendation of the tire manufacturer and do not have to be entered.

In the " Manufacturer's Certificate " you can now find tires with different tire sizes or types. The required assessment according to §21 StVZO as well as the subsequent change of the vehicle documents at the vehicle registration office are subject to charges .

In other words: tire dimensions that have been approved by the tire manufacturer for the corresponding motorcycle model, but are not entered with the appropriate sizes in the registration certificate , can no longer simply be fitted . You must first be entered if you want to avoid expiry of the operating license. For this, bikers have to drive up to a test organization such as TÜV, GTÜ, Dekra or KÜS  .

This applies to motorcycle tires with a manufacturer's date before 2020

In the case of fitted tires with a manufacturer's date before 2020 , the previous tire approvals (safety certificates or tire recommendations  ) continue to apply to all motorcycles . For these tires, it is sufficient to carry the tire approval with you. This regulation applies until 01/01/2025 .

I recommend newcomers to motorbikes - and not just them , to get advice from tire dealers on this complex topic in order to avoid problems.

In addition, motorcyclists should pay close attention to the tires of their bikes . After all, these are the only connection to the road. Checking the filling pressure and checking for damage are part of the safety measures , as is checking the remaining profile depth . In Germany, the residual profile depth must be at least 1.6 millimeters . It is considered to have been reached when this dimension is reached at one point on the tire. Mop as , mopeds and Co. must have a minimum profile depth of 1 millimeter .

Tires shouldn't be too old either. We recommend changing tires after 6 years. Their age can be easily determined using the DOT number stamped on the side of the tire. For example, the number combination 4214 means that the tire was manufactured in calendar week 42 in 2014. "
