The traffic sign "Anlieger frei" makes drivers ponder. Who is the term "neighboring"? Are these only residents?
A round prohibition sign - white background with a red border - normally blocks roads for through traffic for vehicles of all kinds. Often, however, the additional sign "Anlieger frei" only permits travel for residents.
Who is a resident?
In general, residential streets would be created to calm traffic, says Karsten Raspe from Tüv Thüringen. But who is actually a resident? "Anyone who has a legitimate interest in driving on the street is considered a resident, " explains Raspe. That means: Visitors, patients from medical practices or customers from local shops also have the right to drive on the corresponding street and to park there. Unless this is prohibited by other prohibition signs.
The Bavarian Supreme Regional Court also ruled that it is irrelevant whether a practical visit is possible. The intention is sufficient. If someone recognizes when driving past the property in question that the person they are looking for cannot be reached, they can even continue without stopping and remain a resident.

High fines
According to the judge's decision, even unwanted visitors of a resident are entitled to drive in. However, Raspe warns against choosing the residential street as an abbreviation . During a police check, excuses often have short legs. "The claim that I wanted to visit a friend in the yellow house up front can be expensive." Because if you can't credibly explain who you really want to visit, you face a fine of up to 75 euros . A minimum of 20 euros is payable for cars and motorized two-wheelers. Even cyclists who disregard the traffic ban can expect a warning of at least 15 euros.
