  • Diesel engine and electric machine - this is a combination that is fun.
  • But does a MILD hybrid vehicle really save fuel?
  • And there is something to complain about about the facelift of the Korean SUV.

1994 marks the birth of SUVs. In the history books of this highly controversial but extremely popular vehicle category, the Toyota RAV4 * appears as the first model of its kind. Perhaps the Japanese were actually a blink of an eye. But in the same year the first Kia Sportage started . At that time he was still a real buddy for the terrain. Derived from a South Korean military jeep, Generation I was sold exclusively with selectable all-wheel drive and off-road gear reduction.

Kia Sportage: One of the most popular SUVs

Back then a car for foresters and freaks - today the Kia Sportage is one of Kia's customers (over five million vehicles sold). If you could only choose between the Toyota RAV4, the Kia Sportage and later the Land Rover Freelander in the mid-1990s, the customer is spoiled for choice today. VW Tiguan *, Opel Grandland, Seat Ateca, Ford Kuga, Skoda Karoq, Audi Q3, BMW X1 and much more vie for buyers favor.

It used to be the low prices, now it's design and technology  - cars from South Korea sell well and are no longer exotic in Germany. The secret of success: Kia develops cars in Europe for the European market - and very decisively with European design . Born in Bad Reichenhall, Peter Schreyer has been responsible for this since 2006. It came from Volkswagen, the Golf IV bore his signature. One of the key design features at Kia is the tiger nose : the striking radiator grille with the double trapezoidal structure also bears the facelift of Generation IV, which rolled onto the street in late 2018 and early 2019.

The visual changes to the predecessor are mainly cosmetic. The Koreans especially upgraded their engines . For the first time there is 2.0 liter diesel with MILD hybridization. That means a small electric motor that is powered by a 48 volt battery helps when starting and accelerating. The 16 HP electric machine discreetly works with and bridges the usual power break in the lower speed ranges until the necessary boost pressure for the turbocharger is built up.

This is already a brisk drive combination, with which you can drive confidently at all times, especially during overtaking maneuvers. The Kia Sportage manages the sprint from  0 to 100  km just under 10 seconds . Not a top value, but finally one should not forget that the compact SUV weighs just under 1.8 tons  . In addition, despite its name, the Sportage is not a sports car, but rather a family carriage.

The rear of the compact SUV is invitingly practical. The flap is also available electrically on request.

Because the Korean has enough space. Although the trunk volume has shrunk a bit due to the MILD hybrid technology (the additional battery must also be accommodated somewhere) - over 400 liters are still available under the trunk cover. If you use the loading floor underneath , there are 600 liters (or eleven beverage crates). This space should be enough for the weekend trip to grandma with the two children. And if you have more to transport, just fold the back seat and then have space for around 1,400 liters. The flat loading edge is positive, which helps with loading and unloading. But it is quite high at 74 centimeters, which is due to the vehicle type SUV.

+

The rear bench can be flexibly divided. If you lay it completely flat, the loading volume increases to 1,428 liters.

In theory, up to five occupants fit into the Sportage . How three adults are supposed to sit in the back - hard to imagine. The four of them and if there are not basketball stars among them, it should be reasonably comfortable. In any case, the driver and front passenger have sufficient leg and headroom - here you feel like you're in a large limousine, also thanks to the seat height of 57 centimeters above street level.

+

Up to five people should fit in. However, hardly any adults, the third place in the back is more of an emergency seat.

The all-round view is neat, the thick C-pillars are a bit annoying on the right and left. It is therefore advisable to order the technology package . It also includes a 360-degree camera . Real images from the immediate surroundings of the vehicle provide more safety and the reassuring feeling of having everything in view. The tech package for 1,890 euros is not cheap, but it offers a lot. Also on board are the adaptive cruise control system with stop-and-go function, blind spot warning, adaptive charging station and the electric tailgate.

The interior of the Kia Sportage

+

The dashboard and cockpit of the Kia Sportage look pleasantly sober and sober, but not boring.

The cockpit is clear, pleasantly factual and sober. The infotainment system is controlled via the 8-inch touchscreen . However, this is not only intuitive, the study of the instructions for use is a basic requirement if you want to find all functions. For this, the Bluetooth connection  with the smartphone is  quickly established. Android Auto and AppleCar Play are docked on board and on the fly.

+

The interior of the Kia can be prettied up with a leather interior. The additional equipment costs 1,490 euros.

If you want to be comfortable with the Kia Sportage, you should definitely take the model with the eight-speed automatic . The gear changes are smooth and brisk - why should you lend a hand yourself? The chassis of the Korean SUV is also comfortable, but it is not available in an adaptive version. This means that you cannot choose between different modes such as sport or normal. We didn't miss that in the new Sportage. The dampers and suspension iron all the bumps of the road in such a balanced manner . And even with brisk driving in the curves, the chassis was precise, but good-natured.

Engine and consumption of the new Kia Sportage

A word about motorization . The large diesel with MILD hybridization is great fun. The electrical support makes the power delivery more homogeneous and linear. The new technology has at least not had a noticeable impact on consumption  . The 5.7 liters per 100 kilometers mentioned by Kia could not be reached. Our test drives were over seven liters, which is not necessarily up-to-date.

Conclusion on the new Kia Sportage

+

Driving fun in the family carriage. The Sportage offers the best of both worlds with the diesel-MILD hybrid unit.

Brisk cardboard mobile for fathers who don't want to give up their driving fun, but still need a practical family carriage. The diesel hybrid shines through its power delivery. The pleasure is not only cheap. In the high-quality GT equipment with technology and leather package, 45,660 euros are then due. Rudolf Bögel
