Berlin (dpa / tmn) - Was it worth the experiment? In any case, VW's convertible coupé got a complicated component: the metal folding roof, which the engineers also donated a glass sunroof.

With the result that the part never kept really tight, as the "Auto Bild Tüv Report 2020" writes. But that's not the only point of criticism that the partially solid Volkswagen has to put up with - which was discontinued after nine years of production without replacement.

Model history: The VW Eos, built on the platform of the Passat, came to dealers in 2006. The facelift for model year 2011: the equipment, front and rear sections were modified, and the engines ran more economically. The rare V6 flew out of the program.

Body variants: The Eos, a compact class car, is a closed coupé, open a convertible, so it combines two variants in one vehicle.

Dimensions: 4.41 mx 1.79 mx 1.44 m (LxWxH), trunk volume: 360 l (half with the roof open).

Strengths: The Eos is a comfortable and torsionally stiff car that has a certain exotic status for a mass manufacturer like VW. During the main inspection (HU), axle suspensions, steering system and joints perform particularly well. Also usually free of defects: brake lines and hoses as well as the parking brake. The exhaust system is also stable.

Weaknesses: taillights and turn signals do not leave a good impression on the models that had to face the fourth HU. Up to the age of nine, the defect rates for springs and dampers are also above average. From this age, the brake discs are also negative, according to the TÜV report. Only average grades for the service brake on vehicles driving up to the third HU. And: prospective buyers should check used vehicles for leaks in the folding roof.

Breakdown behavior: With reference to its breakdown statistics, the ADAC writes: "The Eos mostly performs well." However, vehicles from the first registration year 2012 made a trip to the middle of the field. The club counts among the few breakdowns of discharged or defective batteries (2009) as well as broken or elongated timing chains (2009 and 2010). According to the TÜV report, this deficiency occurs primarily in the 1.4-liter TSI.

Engines: petrol (four- and six-cylinder with front-wheel drive): 85 kW / 115 PS to 191 kW / 260 PS; Diesel (four-cylinder with front-wheel drive): 103 kW / 140 hp.

Market prices (according to the "DAT Markttspiegel" by Deutsche Automobil Treuhand, each with statistically expected kilometers):

- Eos 1.4 TSI (2013); 118 kW / 160 hp (four-cylinder); 96,000 kilometers; 11,000 euros.

- Eos 2.0 TSI (2015); 155 kW / 210 hp (four-cylinder); 71,000 kilometers; 14 250 euros.

- Eos 2.0 TDI BMT (2014); 103 kW / 140 hp (four-cylinder); 102,000 kilometers; 12 250 euros.
