A dispute between two asylum seekers ended with the death of one of them, Friday afternoon, in Chaumont (Haute-Marne). The alleged perpetrator shared accommodation with his victim in a social residence. He was indicted on Sunday for murder and placed in pre-trial detention, reports the prosecution of Chaumont, confirming information from the Journal de la Haute-Marne.
Born in Somalia in 1993 and living in France since 2017, the man identified himself on the arrival of the police as the author of the fatal blows. He would have been angry with his roommate, with whom he already didn't get along, about the bathroom they both wanted to use at the same time.
The victim was said to have received around 15 stab wounds. An Afghan national, also born in 1993, the latter arrived in France in January. Another roommate was present in the apartment but did not see the scene.
Roommates since January
The six tenants lived in pairs per room in this accommodation, which is part of the emergency accommodation for asylum seekers (HUDA). The suspect and the victim have been living together since January.
The association for the reception of workers and migrants, which accompanies them, was present "every day, including weekends" during the confinement. The tenants did not feel in danger with the suspect. None of the asylum seekers alerted of a risk of endangerment or asked to change their accommodation, underlines the association.
"Everyone had the Covid, vigilance was even more reinforced," adds the AATM. According to the same source, this apartment, located in an HLM, had been attached to a reception and orientation center opened in 2016 to welcome migrants from Calais at the time of the dismantling of the "Jungle".
