Under the ice: The heat wave that hit Siberia last summer worries environmental researchers, but also brings with it important discoveries for science, it was reported today (Saturday) on the news site "Voice America". Researchers are currently working to extract a rare find - an entire skeleton of a mammoth, found by deer herders in an area that is usually under ice 365 days a year.

At first the shepherds found the mammoth's skull but the researchers believe that this is one of the cases where a full skeleton will be found and therefore they plan to invest a lot of time and effort in extracting the skeleton and even brought unique equipment for this purpose.

Dimitri Prolov, director of the Arctic research station in the area, said of the findings and said: "According to preliminary information we have, the full skeleton is there. According to the photos, it is a young mammoth, but we have to wait for further tests before we can determine it."

The Siberian mammoths, which are estimated to have become extinct about 10,000 years ago, resembled an Asian elephant, but were covered in thick brown fur, and they thrived in the Ice Age. The melting of the witness ice in areas like Siberia and other frozen areas has revealed many fossils that have been buried under the ice for thousands of years and more. The thawing is the result of an unusual heat wave in the Siberian region in 2020.
