The writer and far-right polemicist Alain Soral was arrested Tuesday afternoon in Paris by the police from the brigade for the repression of personal delinquency (BRDP). He was placed in police custody for "provocation to commit a crime or offense against the fundamental interests of the Nation", according to our information. His custody could last until Thursday. He could then be referred to the Paris prosecutor's office.
A preliminary investigation was opened following a speech on his site Equality and Reconciliation, which indicated that his home had been searched.
Alain Soral was sentenced in January 2019 to one year in prison by the Bobigny Criminal Court. He had been found guilty of racial insult, provocation and incitement to racial hatred over remarks made against a prosecutor on his site Equality and reconciliation. A few months later, the essayist was again sentenced by the Paris Criminal Court this time, to one year in prison with an arrest warrant, for contesting the existence of the Shoah. He was also convicted in December 2018 for defamation. Each time he appealed, thus escaping prison.
In the absence of an arrest warrant or deposit, Alain Soral's appeals suspend the execution of his prison sentences. In the event that they would be confirmed on appeal and his cassation appeals rejected, he could theoretically go to prison.
