The social network Instagram announced on Tuesday the launch of Reels , a new format that offers users the possibility of creating and discovering short videos of up to 15 seconds edited , for users in the Latin American market, among which Argentina, Brazil and Mexico.

The "Reels" function of Instagram, which will be available just by updating the app version on Android and iOS, will allow users to create fifteen-second videos to which they can add various effects, filters and audios, as well as share them with their followers.

It is a new function for editing short-format videos, it is a new option that is added to the well-known Stories (Stories) and IGTV (Instagram TV) that stands out for offering more ways to express itself creatively and share what people consider important, be it a fun dance with music or raising awareness about social causes, as they clarify from the social network.

Reels is special because at the same time you can share with friends and followers and also be discovered by the huge, diverse and global Instagram community by sharing creations in "Explore".

You can also share your Reels with your followers in the news section and if your account is public you will be able to publish your short videos in the "Explore" space. This means that it will be visible to a wider audience, as is the case with TikTok.

Also, the new Reels section within "Explore" will have a wide selection of short videos created by our users that can serve as inspiration for your next video.

The social network officially implemented this new function last July in India, in response to the void left by the Chinese TikTok application, recently banned by the Indian Government in the midst of a diplomatic crisis between New Delhi and Beijing.

India was the fourth country that Reels could try after Germany, France and last November it was Brazil's turn . Precisely the experience in the neighboring country helped the social network to polish this function after a year of work.

"We are very excited to launch Reels in Latin America. We had a lot of feedback from content creators and tested it in 15 countries. We believe this feature will be an essential part of the next generation of entertainment on Instagram," said Tessa Lyons-Laing, Product Director of Instagram, to the Clarín newspaper.

He added: "With Reels, anyone can be a creator. We are looking forward to seeing the new generation of Argentine talent on Instagram."

The rivalry with TikTok

Reels is the response of Mark Zuckerberg with whom Instagram intends to stop the great growth registered in the last year by the Chinese social network, which has 800 million users and which now also faces the threat of the President of the United States, Donald Trump , to ban the application in your country for security reasons.

Precisely this announcement coincided in time with Microsoft's interest in acquiring TikTok, a situation that Instagram does not want to speculate about, according to Tessa Lyons-Laing.

On the other hand, Instagram emphasized the easy handling that characterizes its app and the possibility that it offers creators to share their content with a wider audience and in very diverse sectors. In this sense, the social network trusts that it will have the same success that the "Stories" had , while recalling that just now it is four years since its launch.

"More competition is good for creators and improves platforms. With Reels we are focused on giving Instagram users another opportunity to broadcast their 15-second videos and all in the same app, " said Tessa.
