They stormed the towers of the coal-fired power station and unrolled a banner with the inscription "Whoever clears us is for coal!" A police spokesman said that around 20 people had entered the site in Berlin-Moabit. The occupation was part of a coordinated protest, in the course of which climate activists pushed into two power plants early on Saturday morning to demonstrate for a faster coal exit.

The activists demanded, among other things, "an end to fossil capitalism", as the action group "Direct Action Berlin" announced. In the Moabit thermal power station, built in 1900, hard coal and, since 2013, biomass are also burned. The operator of the power plant on Friedrich-Krause-Ufer is the Swedish energy company Vattenfall.

In Mannheim, five to six people gained access to the site of the hard coal power plant. According to the police, the activists climbed onto the roof of a coal mine. The conveyor belt of the power plant block had been stopped.

The operators of the pile in Mannheim are the three energy groups RWE (Essen), EnBW (Karlsruhe) and MVV (Mannheim). In 2015, the 1.2 billion block 9 went online. It has an output of almost 900 megawatts.

The large power plant has often been the focus of protests: Opponents had called it a "climate killer". A year ago, around 100 people entered the power plant area. At that time they blocked the driveway and a conveyor belt.

Editor's note: In an earlier version, the output of block 9 of the Mannheim power plant was specified as 2150 megawatts. In reality, the output is only 900 megawatts. We changed the passage.
