Sunday, 09 August 2020, 07:34The Dokaviv Festival is not only the flagship event of the documentary industry in Israel, but one of the most important film festivals in the country. It is an integral part of the local culture and can not be described without it. Therefore, despite the corona and despite the limitations - it will also take place this year, albeit at a later date than usual and of course in a different format. At least for now, the screenings will be virtual and occasionally in a drive-in format.
The festival will be launched in early September and today its full program is published. The local menu has already been published and remains the same, except for a few changes - "The Human Factor", Dror Moreh's new film, which was nominated for an Oscar for "The Gatekeepers", will not be screened in the end. In contrast, he enjoyed world premieres of some intriguing docu-films; "Until the End of the World" by Maya Zinstein, the Emmy winner of "Pure Forever," will deal with the connection between evangelical Christians and Israel; Moore Lushi's "Lobby" ("Warriors' Discourse") will discuss a similar issue - the influence of the pro-Israel lobby in the United States; And Roni Abulafia's 'Olmert' will paint a portrait of the prime minister who became a prisoner.
Also on display will be two biographies made by the sons and daughters of the subjects of the documentation - "Rain in the Eyes" by Ron Omer about his mother, the writer Deborah Omer and "Mother Queen" by Yael Abkasis on her mother Raymond. The docu-musical corner will also feature "Rockfor: The Time Machine," a fresh documentary about the band by which it is named.

From the docu "Newton" (Photo: PR)In the international framework, there will be local premieres of several films that have held their world premieres at prestigious international festivals. For example, "Last Round" by brothers Bill and Turner Ross, about the last night in the life of an American bar to which all dreams come to shatter; "Epicenter," Hubert Sauper's acclaimed film with "Darwin's Nightmare," and this time embarking on a journey in Havana; "Women Make Movies" by Mark Cousins, one of the most prominent filmmakers in the British Isles, who seeks to describe how directors changed the history of cinema and were excluded from it, and more and more.
As usual, those looking for docu-movies about male and female artists will find what they are looking for. Thus, among other things, fresh documentaries about Billy Holiday, Charles Aznavour, The Goose, The Photographer Helmut Newton and more will be shown.
Of course, guests will not physically come to the festival, but some of them will have virtual meetings with the Israeli audience. You can find out more about this and more on the official website of Dokaviv.
