Jazz from Japan - it first appeared in the 1980s. How do later generations of the new edition Honda has been making of its small car since the early 2000s?

Berlin (dpa / tmn) - There is music in it - in a figurative sense that applies to the Honda Jazz: It takes a lot of charge for a small car and also varies its engine sound: In addition to the gasoline engines, it is also available with a hybrid drive.

In the main inspection (HU) it shines - with exceptions in one assembly.

Model history: The first generation starts in 2002 (as a descendant of original jazz from the 1980s). Generations two and three considered here moved up in 2008 and 2015. The Japanese manufacturer carried out facelifts in 2011 and 2017. The fourth edition has been on the market since 2020.

Body variants: The Jazz has always been part of the small car segment. While the Ur-Jazz was still a two-door, Honda built all subsequent versions with four doors. The generation manufactured between 2008 and 2014 has a structure based on minivans.

Dimensions: 2nd generation: 3.90 mx 1.70 mx 1.53 m (LxWxH), trunk volume: 428 l to 1396 l (hybrid: 332 l to 1323 l); 3rd generation: 4.00 mx 1.69 mx 1.52 m (LxWxH), trunk volume: 354 l to 1314 l.

Strengths: The second generation of models is particularly spacious for a small car. The interior is flexible, the engines are considered to be adequately dimensioned. During the general inspection (HU) most problems are a thing of the past. Above all, the chassis components earn praise: complaints about the steering system, drive shafts and axle springs are well below average, as reported in the "Auto Bild Tüv Report 2020". The same goes for the lighting, and oil leakage is also rare.

Weaknesses: "If it weren't for the above-average deficiency rates on brake disks and lines - the Jazz would be an unreserved recommendation," writes the TÜV report. From a vehicle age of five years, the disks suffer from high wear and tear, rust, and the foot brake is criticized more often than the average. After all, these deficiencies can be remedied quite cheaply, and especially young third-generation models are not yet affected.

Breakdown behavior: Also hardly any concerns from ADAC. With a view to its breakdown statistics, the club writes: "Jazz scores good to very good." The main defects are limited to defective batteries in vehicles from the first registration years 2014 and 2015 as well as striking spark plugs (2012 and 2013).

Engines: 2nd generation: petrol engine (four-cylinder with front-wheel drive): 66 kW / 90 PS to 88 kW / 120 PS; Hybrid (four-cylinder + electric motor with front-wheel drive): 65 kW / 88 PS + 10 kW / 14 PS; 3rd generation: petrol engine (four-cylinder with front-wheel drive): 75 kW / 102 PS and 96 kW / 130 PS.

Market prices (according to "DAT market mirror" from Deutsche Automobil Treuhand with statistically expected kilometers in each case): - Jazz 1.2 i Trend (2013); 66 kW / 90 PS (four-cylinder); 99,000 kilometers; 6375 euros. - Jazz 1.3 DSI Hybrid Comfort (2015); 65 kW / 88 PS (four-cylinder + electric motor); 74,000 kilometers; 9450 euros. - Jazz 1.3 i-VTEC Trend (2017); 75 kW / 102 PS (four-cylinder); 48,000 kilometers; 10 400 euros.
