Minister of Communications Yoaz Handel today (Thursday) approved the deal to merge the cellular companies "Cellcom" and Golan Telecom, subject to conditions after several months of discussions.

"As part of the conditions for approving the merger, the ministry acted to ensure, among other things, that the terms of mobile service for Golan customers will be maintained. The ministry believes that the move will not harm the level of competitiveness in the communications market Handel said in an official statement issued today.

The deal was finally approved after several months of such discussions, and this merger will make Cellcom the largest cellular operator in the market. Cellcom submitted its first offer for purchase last February for a total of NIS 750 million, according to reports, and in June it was approved by the Competition Authority and also received a boost from the Treasury.

Cellcom CEO Avi Gabay thanked Minister Handel, the firm's CEO, Liran Avishar Ben Horin and her team. Gabay said that once the deal is completed, Golan Telecom will continue to operate as an independent and competitive entity and will continue to be as attractive as it has been so far.
