Robert Koch Institute: Number of Corona cases in Germany increases by 625

05.26 a.m.: Within one day, the health authorities in Germany reported 625 new corona infections. This emerges from the information from the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) from early Sunday morning. On Friday and Saturday, the RKI reported more than 1,400 new infections within 24 hours - more than since the beginning of May. Experience has shown that the reported numbers are often lower on Sundays because not all health authorities transmit data to the RKI on the weekend.

Peru: 22,000 soldiers enforce curfew in Lima

4.10 a.m.: In the Peruvian capital Lima, more than 22,000 soldiers and police officers enforce a Sunday curfew after the coronavirus infections have risen again. If you want to spend the day with the family and healthy, you should spend it at home, said Lima's police chief on Saturday (local time). There was a Sunday curfew in the South American country from April to June.

According to the police chief, the police are allowed to enter houses if there are family reunions. Anyone caught in a car during the curfew also has to pay a fine of around 1550 euros.

After Brazil and Mexico, Peru is the country with the third highest number of deaths in Latin America with 25,856 registered corona deaths. In terms of the number of cases, Peru ranks second after Brazil with 516,296 reported infected people.

A night curfew has been in effect in Peru since mid-March. Other corona measures had been relaxed in the past few weeks.

Finance Minister Scholz wants to extend the payment of short-time work benefits

03:13 a.m.: Federal Finance Minister Olaf Scholz (SPD) wants to extend the payment of short-time allowance from the current one to two years. "The Corona crisis won't suddenly go away in the next few weeks," said the Vice Chancellor of "Bild am Sonntag".

Companies and employees need a clear signal from the government. "We'll go with you all the way through the crisis so that no one is dismissed on the track without need," said Scholz.

Education Minister Karliczek warns of high stress for teachers

11/02 a.m .: In the dispute over how to deal with teachers from corona risk groups, Federal Education Minister Anja Karliczek (CDU) warned the federal states of unreasonable burdens for teachers. "It is important for every employer to take care of the health of its employees," Karliczek told "Welt am Sonntag". It is true that the competence of all teachers is required, but the work must not become a personal risk for them.

The Federal Minister expressed herself against the background of a conflict over the rejection of many certificates, which is being carried out between the government and the teaching staff, especially in Schleswig-Holstein. The teachers' union GEW accuses the Kiel Education Minister Karin Prien (CDU) of a "hard-hearted course" that forces affected teachers into classroom teaching.

2000 of the 28,000 teachers in Schleswig-Holstein had submitted a certificate showing that they belonged to a risk group. "The company doctor brushed off all but a hundred cases - from our point of view without a sufficient individual examination. That is completely unacceptable," said GEW country manager Bernd Schauer of "Welt am Sonntag". Ten lawsuits were filed against the decision.

Minister Prien rejects the allegations. For teachers, as for all state employees, applies: "It always depends on the individual risk assessment." Suffering from a lifestyle disease such as obesity or asthma does not yet justify a special need for protection.

At 0.35 percent, the drop-out rate of teachers for face-to-face teaching in Schleswig-Holstein is particularly low. But other countries are also apparently adopting a restrictive approach: Brandenburg reports a failure rate of 0.9 and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania 1.5 percent. According to an initial evaluation, however, Berlin reckons with five percent. The unions had previously estimated the proportion of the risk group at around ten percent.

Berlin's governing mayor wants to punish violations of corona rules more severely

12:38 a.m.: Berlin's Governing Mayor Michael Müller wants to pursue and punish violations of the everyday rules to protect against the corona pandemic more consistently. "The Corona deniers endanger many. There is no excuse for that, we have to be stricter," said the SPD politician of "Bild am Sonntag". His government will ensure that the guest lists in the catering trade are kept properly. "We will stop demonstrations faster if the mask requirement is not observed. Then we will impose fines and, if necessary, dissolve the demo immediately."

Müller admitted that it was not possible to enforce everything with state intervention, police and repression. But the incorrigible must be targeted and tough.

According to Müller, the Berlin police wrote a total of 350 reports of violations of the Infection Protection Ordinance from mid-July to mid-August. Then there are the procedures of the regulatory authorities, as he said. Berlin wants to strengthen its personnel.

Müller expressed skepticism about major events, which, according to current knowledge, pose a great danger. "For the time being, there will be no trade fairs, congresses, major concerts and sporting events with several thousand spectators without conditions. In my opinion, that will only be possible when a vaccine or an effective drug against  corona  is available." He called the concert planned for September with 13,000 spectators in Düsseldorf very risky.
