A groundbreaking decision by the Berlin Film Festival. According to an official announcement issued by his management yesterday, it was decided to cancel the gender divisions during the distribution of the game prizes. That is, from his upcoming edition to be held this winter, no more awards will be presented to the best actor and best actress. Instead, there will be decorations for the best main appearance and the best sub-appearance.
In doing so, the Berlin event becomes the first major film festival to undo this gender segregation, and it now remains to be seen whether more festivals and perhaps even awards like the Golden Globe and the Oscar will follow.

The Berlin move won praise but also criticism. Some have argued that this is nothing more than a symbolic, meaningless and even harmful parade, as long as the gender imbalance in the industry does not change. After all, most of the films are made by men and deal with male characters, so male actors will naturally have a greater chance, and the move may lead to fewer women receiving fewer awards.
Alongside this announcement, the festival also stated its intention to take place in a regular physical format during the winter, despite the flu and despite the corona. In the meantime, the world of festivals will stand a challenging test in a week, with the Venice Film Festival set to launch in a physical format as well, making it the first major film event to do so since the outbreak of the plague.
