A merger in North America may fill gaps in the model offerings of the two giants

The collaboration will take place between the North American division of Honda and GM.

When Honda will bring its relative advantage in small cars, especially sedans and SUVs while GM will create a supply of vans and large SUVs for the Japanese brand.

This, with a large-scale move to electrify propulsion systems in many models at both brands in the background.

GM, for its part, has already announced that it will launch about 20 electric (BEV) models by 2023.

Last week Honda and GM had already signed a memorandum of understanding for a connection between them.

This includes using common platforms that will be marketed under the two brands as well as concentrating procurement and R&D efforts.

Joint developments in the fields of connectivity, various propulsion systems and logistics.

Unlike the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi merger, the collaboration between Honda and GM does not involve mutual acquisition of shares - said a Honda North America spokesman - the aim is to improve operations in North America and free up resources needed elsewhere in the world.

“The goal is to survive in North America.

We will do this by improving our competitions and directing resources to the development of future technologies. ”

This is not the first time GM has partnered with a Japanese brand in North America.

Between 1989 and 2004 GM marketed the GEO brand models that were the product of collaborations with Toyota, a rebranded Corolla, and with Suzuki provided by rebranded Swift and Vitara.

In both cases, the cars came from factories in the United States.

Isuzu also contributed two privacy models to the brand - at a time when it was still creating such cars.
