Courses During Corona - Part II

After Tal became clear about the essence of the task of working on errands, he went to figure out what the right tools were to perform.

Or in other words - why hunting ducks using Tomahawk missiles is not a successful idea

Electric bike, scooter, motorcycle or car?

Summary of previous episodes: Tal Reier, who before the Corona divided his time between guiding motorcycle trips in the Alps and across Europe to Israel, finds himself disabled from work.

He decides not to sit at home and wait for a change, grant or vaccination and enter the evolving mission scene.

Now he just has to decide with which tool he is doing it.

When I was about eight years old, in our first days in the country (before the family's equipment grocery store completed its immigration route to Israel) we were required to hang something on the wall in the house urgently.

My grandfather decided this was a great opportunity to teach me to drill a hole in a concrete wall using a screwdriver-like iron rod and hammer.

Sounds a little silly, but that's what it was and with that we had to win.

After about half a day of knocking two things happened: The first: the hole, in all its glory was drilled to the diameter and depth that generally reminded of the required specification.

Second: Arrived next door from upstairs, somewhat nervous but equipped with a state-of-the-art hammer drill and matching drill set, drilled the rest of the holes in less than three minutes, and disappeared.

Although that day I learned to drill holes in the wall (with a drill and without) but the real moral of that founding event was that when you come to perform a task - it is better that you are equipped with the right tools.

Bicycles are cheap to buy and maintain, but tying them up at every stop and carrying restrictions make it difficult to choose them (Photo: Reuven Castro)

Food deliveries

Food deliveries define a rather limited and specific set of requirements: the volume and weight of the shipment are limited, and are dictated by the size of the unique bag, while the distances required to cover during shipments are usually not large and mostly include agile transportation within volume volumes.

That is why electric bicycles or miniature scooters are the ultimate solution when each has its own advantages and disadvantages.

The bikes are indeed significantly cheaper to purchase and operate, since there is no compulsory insurance and no driver's license requirement (yes, a theory pass is required), no fuel expenses, etc.

But not everything is "pink" and this common hit vehicle has a number of not inconsiderable drawbacks.

Let's start with the range of operation - in a full shift of a full day, even if in the city, you can easily reach a significant amount of km that will greatly challenge the battery capacity. Another disadvantage - electric bikes are easy to steal and therefore can not be left "just like that" on the street without tying (ie In addition, you will find yourself dealing with the lock for longer than riders.) In addition to these two disadvantages, unless it is a large and massive bike (and therefore also expensive) it is not really possible to tie the shipping bag to them stably. This means that the dubious experience of carrying with you A large, cumbersome and heavy bag on the back at the height of the heat.

A small scooter will solve the problem of range and security, but is more expensive to purchase and maintain

A small scooter (125 to 200 cc) will be a more appropriate solution both for carrying the bag and for the range limit and cancellation by visiting a random gas station.

Beyond that, a scooter is equipped with a key for propulsion and locking so, usually, it can be left for a few minutes on the sidewalk without special tying while you enter the building for a moment to deliver the shipment.

Long distance delivery is also possible through it.

Disadvantages: higher purchase cost, compulsory insurance prices (exorbitant), and wear and tear costs (treatments, tires, etc.) are higher.

On the other hand, if you had an accident while riding an electric bicycle (the chance / risk, by the way, is the same and even higher than a scooter) - you will not receive any compensation from anyone.

Afraid to get on two wheels?

Take it easy, quite rightly so.

In the context of shipments - officially, Wolt claims that deliveries can also be made by private car (ie car).

But if you have not been to one of the major cities in the country when you are behind the wheel of a private car in the last decade - I doubt it should be exaggerated why this is not really a viable option, so I will shorten the matter to two key concepts: parking and traffic loads.

Need it most detailed?

- Just ask one of the residents of Tel Aviv why they often refrain from moving their car for weeks.

A large motorcycle would be a great solution for the need to carry packages for long-distance ranges - but it comes at a price ...

Package deliveries

The world of parcel deliveries, however, is wide and significantly diverse.

Your vehicle will have to perform a variety of different tasks, especially if you want to enjoy the ability to choose from a variety of shipments.

Although these are often deliveries that could also be made by bicycle (such as office mail), the supply of these is limited.

Not only that, you will often find yourself moving an envelope or a small package between the edges of Gush Dan (for example from Ramat Hasharon to Rishon Lezion) and even a real intercity (Tel Aviv - Hadera, or Haifa - Carmiel), such missions already require a tool with reasonable mobility capabilities On a long-distance road. Technically, it is of course possible to do the same with a 125 cc scooter, but it will be a bit reminiscent of the drilling story from the beginning of the article - stupid and inefficient.

It is important to know that in some of the delivery apps there is definitely a logical place to work with the private vehicle and we will make sure to review this option later.

Let's say that if you have a leasing vehicle from work and you have already planned to supplement income through it - we recommend thinking about it again, it is doubtful whether the vehicle officer and the accountant will view the matter favorably.

Thinking of doing errands with a company car?

Think again

If so, a two-wheeler (even a three-wheeler is fine if you insist) with at least basic long-distance capability is the ultimate solution.

Such a tool will provide an appropriate solution for food deliveries, packages, and those who want to combine.

"What a beauty" I thought to myself, for the benefit of leading the mounted journeys I already have a large and luxurious motorcycle, which knows how to cover distances easily, comfortably and quickly, while being able to carry serious quantities of equipment without shaking the handlebars.

But the joy was short-lived - a quick calculation showed how impractical the use of a large motorcycle is in favor of tasks like making deliveries.

Not in terms of technical ability, but due to the fact that the wear and tear costs on motorcycles are significantly higher, about 3 times that of a scooter.

Summary of comparing maintenance costs between a motorcycle and a small scooter

The table above shows the main wear and tear items, and does not include impairment due to the cumulative mileage, or the cost of insurance (items that also do not benefit large and expensive motorcycles). The cost of fuel was calculated at NIS 5.5 per liter and the parts were calculated based on average prices for original parts. Or original matches in terms of quality and durability and includes work.

It is important to note that the wear calculation is an "optimistic - for a gentle rider" calculation, which means that in practice, the average rider will probably find himself more "aggressive" replacing the components even earlier, especially on heavy motorcycles, which will only increase the gap in favor of the scooter.

Scooter designed in advance to deal with hostile urban areas (Photo: Assaf Rahamim)

The reason for the huge gap is simple - the designation of the tools.

While scooters are pre-designed to be used as an agile and urban tool, a kind of useful and inexpensive "corkscrew" for operation and maintenance, motorcycles, especially the larger and heavier ones, are designed to handle much higher speeds and loads and provide radically different experiences.

For the sake of illustration we will take the brake pads, that of an urban scooter that costs less than NIS 100 per unit will not be able to cope with stopping a large and heavy motorcycle from long-distance speed.

This requires a strong and durable braking system that can also provide plenty of emotion to the rider, so it will require the use of completely different pads - the price of these easily crosses the NIS 500 per unit threshold.

Not only that, but because of the need to provide emotion and re-feeding the materials will be softer and will wear out faster, especially in urban use.

A medium-volume dual-use motorcycle will be relatively expensive to maintain, but will solve the problems of loading and covering distances

The most advanced is the most lucrative

Compulsory insurance starting at NIS 54 per month

Purchase >>

The conclusion is quite simple: if you have a small motorcycle that is light and relatively cheap to operate, up to 500-600 cc as a rule of thumb (with some exceptions like the Honda NC750X, for example) and you do not mind loading packages and even installing a large courier box - it makes sense mobilizing in favor of the mission of making deliveries. costs There will be higher than those of a scooter, but the scale is reasonable and logical. nation so if the bike to your larger and more expensive, both to purchase and maintain - you probably prefer to stock up on a motor scooter.

in the next chapter: Who scooter selected in favor of execution The mission, and what were the criteria that of all the selection available today in the two-wheeler market in Israel led to the choice of this specific model.
