In the list of the most-followed Instagram accounts, Kim Kardashian is currently in seventh place, just behind Selena Gomez and clearly ahead of footballer Lionel Messi.

Your reach and access to the throngs of fans are enormous.

Now the US reality TV star apparently wants to send a signal shortly before the presidential election.

Kardashian has announced that it is going on a Facebook and Instagram strike over misinformation on social media.

Under the hashtag "#StopHateForProfit" (stop hating for profit) the 39-year-old announced that she wanted to "freeze" her accounts on Wednesday.

And she called on her followers to do the same.

"I think it's great that I can get in direct contact with you on Instagram and Facebook, but I can't watch these platforms continue to spread hate, propaganda and misinformation - created by groups that want to divide America and drive America apart "wrote Kardashian to her 188 million Instagram subscribers on Tuesday.

Wrong information on social media would have a major impact on the US elections and undermine democracy.

Her husband, the musician Kanye West, has appeared publicly with President Donald Trump several times in the past.

West also stated that he would like to run as a possible third candidate in the November election.

Again and again allegations against Facebook

Since Trump was elected US President in 2016, the issue of influencing elections has been the subject of heated debate in the United States.

False stories that are supposed to harm politicians or groups and thus could further divide US society spread virally.

Facebook in particular, which also includes the Instagram platform, is under pressure and has announced steps to counteract the influence of voters before the presidential election in early November.
