New Apple watches and iPads: three findings from the show

2020-09-16T03:19:56.372Z

It started very quickly and ended like this: It took Apple barely more than an hour to present half a dozen new products and services. Important subtleties only revealed themselves afterwards.

It was one of the shortest Apple events to date.

Just an hour and four minutes after Apple CEO Tim Cook initiated the online presentation, he said goodbye again.

In between, however, there were 64 minutes of high-speed gadget entertainment, in which Apple's manager presented a number of new products and services.

However, Cook made it clear that iPhones would not be there just 130 seconds after the show began when he said that today the focus will be on the Apple Watch and the iPad.

So you will have to wait a little longer for the new iPhones and the first Macs with Apple processors.

Even so, it was anything but boring what the iPhone company showed on this iPhone-free evening.

And not so much because the new Apple Watch Series 6 has a sensor that can determine in just 15 seconds how high the blood oxygen value of the person wearing the Apple Watch is.

Manufacturers of other smartwatches have long been offering this function.

Apple Watch: Always keep an eye on the children

What other manufacturers don't have is a feature Apple calls "family configuration".

Behind this is the possibility of configuring the Apple Watches of other family members via iPhone.

Parents should use this, for example, to set their children's smartwatches.

The possibilities are fascinating and terrifying at the same time.

With an Apple Watch configured in this way, you can not only send messages to the child, but also locate their location.

If you want, you can go one step further and be automatically informed whether the child has reached certain places on certain days and at certain times: Has it arrived at school on time in the morning, in the sports club in the afternoon, at a friend's house in the evening?

Of course, you can also turn all of this off.

In any case, Apple recommends making the basic settings together with the future user of the watch so that he or she can help determine which data his or her watch should reveal.

Basically, the function is available to all people who are grouped together using family sharing, and grandparents could also be invited to do so.

In principle, the family configuration can also be used with Apple Watches from Series 4, so not only with the new models.

An LTE module is a prerequisite for this to work.

The professional: the new iPad Air

At first glance, the new iPad Air looks like an iPad Pro, as it has got the same shape and can now also use the Apple Pencil and Magic Keyboard, which were previously reserved for the expensive professional models.

What makes it really special, however, is that it is the first device in which Apple's new A14 Bionic processor will do its job, which is also planned for the next iPhones.

With its 11.8 billion processors, it leaves the A13 Bionic of the last iPhone generation, which is equipped with 8.6 billion processors, far behind and should provide a powerful boost in performance.

A comparison with the chips built into the current iPad Pro is not that trivial.

Their A12Z chip also has more than 10 billion transistors.

Ultimately, only direct comparisons will be able to show whether an iPad Air with the new chip is really superior to an iPad Pro with the older chip - and if so, how much.

With restrictions only: Apple One

In addition to the hardware, it became clear once again how much Apple is interested in keeping its customers in its ecosystem.

After iCloud, Apple Music, Apple TV + and Apple Arcade, Fitness + now follows.

The new offer is intended to make exercise-hungry users work up a sweat with video workouts that run in parallel on iPhone or iPad and Apple Watch.

In Germany, the home sports offer will not be available for the time being.

Before that can start, appropriate training videos must first be shot in German or Germanized.

And Apple One, the new Apple services combo subscription, is currently only available in the savings versions in this country.

You can book the complete package of Apple Music, Apple TV +, Apple Arcade and 50 GB iCloud storage from autumn for 15 euros per month for individuals or for 20 euros per month for the whole family.

In the USA, Apple also offers a variant with two terabytes of cloud storage, but this cannot be available in Germany because this offer also includes Apple News + and Fitness +, which are not available here.

When that will change is unclear, but it could take a while.

What won't take long, however, is that Apple will add another one after the high-speed show on Tuesday evening, which will then probably only be about iPhones and their accessories.

Apple is of course keeping a secret when it will take place.

It should be ready in early to mid-October.

The factories will then also be able to deliver the first few million copies of the new smartphones.
