Ford Puma: Tub hadde dude there?

2020-09-20T06:01:58.636Z

Compact SUV models abound, but the Ford Puma stands out from the crowd with one detail - a kind of sink in the rear. Crazy? We examined the Gaga Extra.

Jürgen, you don't have to pour the car.

Nico, I'm not watering the car.

The water here is just a fluid transition to the most original detail offered by the car we are taking a tour in today.

The new Ford Puma.

It has a kind of built-in sink in the trunk, called Mega Box, and it holds 81 liters.

And the best thing about it is that there is even a drain plug through which the water can drain again.

Why is it built in?

For example, to transport dirty hiking shoes, wet wetsuits or earthy flower pots and then to be able to wet clean the trunk again.

We wanted to do a lap.

But first we should drain the water again.

The water features are over, now let's deal with the whole car.

This is the new Ford Puma, on the market since the end of 2019, and the Puma is technically based on the Ford Fiesta.

It is, if you will, a Fiesta turned into an SUV.

A little bigger, a little beefier.

We drive an equipment level called the ST-Line X. There are a total of five equipment levels and ours here, which is characterized, for example, by a black headliner, a leather steering wheel with red decorative stitching, seats, a fabric-leather combination with red decorative stitching .

There is a 12.3-inch screen in the cockpit, a digital cockpit, an eight-inch touchscreen that is used to control the navigation and the multimedia system.

We also have a lot of buttons on the steering wheel here.

Above all, many of the assistance systems can be activated or set via this, such as the adaptive cruise control and the emergency brake assistant.

There is a blind spot warning, there is traffic sign recognition and this traffic sign recognition is even equipped with a wrong-way, i.e. wrong-way driving warning.

So if you drive into the wrong lane, for example on the autobahn, the alarm goes off.

So what else do we have.

We have a driving program switch down here, where five driving modes can be set, e.g. Eco, Sport, slippery, unpaved road or normal.

And as an extra in our car, there is a two-part panoramic sliding roof that can be operated electrically for a surcharge of 975 euros.

Let's take a look at the exterior design of the new Puma.

Puma, the name of a big cat, and I think that's pretty good.

This is also reflected in the body, which appears muscular and at the same time supple.

We also have such nice details here, like these daytime running lights that look a bit like claw scratches.

And there is this big, radiator mouth, the mouth with black plastic, roughly planned.

We drive the ST-LineX equipment and it is also recognizable from the outside, for example on 18 inch wheels, for example on so-called high-gloss inserts, i.e. glossy black stripes here in the sills.

There are also dark-tinted windows all around in the rear.

The puma is 4.21 meters long, 1.80 wide and 1.55 high.

So now let's take a look under the hood.

The Ford Puma has a diesel and two petrol engines.

We drive the mild hybrid drive with the small gasoline engine.

And it's a 1.3-liter three-cylinder with turbocharging, direct injection and cylinder deactivation.

This means that when the load is low, the engine only runs with two cylinders.

The engine develops 125 hp, or 92 kW, plus a maximum torque of 210 Newton meters.

It meets the Euro 6d-Temp emissions standard and Ford specifies 5.4 liters as the average consumption according to the WLTP standard.

We drive the car in everyday life with a good six liters consumption.

The hybrid component is a belt starter generator, i.e. an electric machine that works with 48 volts and has an output of 11.5 kW.

That is about 16 hp.

And this machine helps the petrol engine start up and accelerate, and it recovers energy when the car coasts.

And this recovered energy is fed into an air-cooled lithium-ion battery.

There it is available again for the next acceleration process.

We wanted to take a closer look at that in practice.

A puma usually sneaks up on soft paws.

That's not exactly the case with this car.

The three-cylinder engine is quite growling and quite loud.

Overall, however, the driving experience, above all the road holding, the cornering behavior, that's really fun, that's good.

The steering is great and we still have a 6-speed manual transmission here, which can also be shifted well.

There is also a 7-speed automatic as an alternative, which then costs 1750 euros extra.

Not so good in the car, that must perhaps be mentioned, is the all-round visibility.

Speaking of all-round visibility, Nico, I would say we'll look back again, right?

Yes everything is clear.

I wanted to show you again how it works here in the rear.

The space is relatively generous for legs and knees, but for the head, head and shoulders, it becomes much narrower.

It's just a compact SUV.

Small specialty: There is also an extra pane of glass in the roof for the rear passengers.

[00:06:56] [18.1]

But now we really want to look at the trunk.

It has an automatic flap that should actually work by moving your foot under it.

[00:07:09] [10.3]

The fourth time it works.

So the loading edge is 77 centimeters high, that means heavy things, you need a little arm strength to lift them up.

The luggage compartment has a capacity of 456 liters, with the rear seat backs folded down it becomes 1216 liters.

And now I have another surprise for you, Nico.

But I already know Jürgen.

Just wait.

Look here, I made an icebox out of the sink.

Look, there are two ice-cold drinks waiting for us here.

Is not that great.

But the conclusion is still missing.

Good conclusion.

We really like this great chassis, the efficient drive and the clever trunk.

We don't like this somewhat cramped feeling in the rear and the not so good all-round view.

The basic model costs 23,395 euros and our variant costs 26,709 euros.
