The Tel Aviv Student Festival was established in the mid-1980s and has since become the largest of its kind in the world.

It has since survived a host of military operations and political boycotts, but this year its existence was endangered for the first time.

Despite the corona and the second closure unexpectedly imposed, its principals have nevertheless found the creative ways to sustain it, and it will be launched virtually tomorrow (Monday).

Here are some of the events that stand out in it

Panels with film men and women

Of course, no guests will come to the festival this year, but the wonders of the zoom allow it to virtually host those who would hardly bother to physically arrive on days without Corona.

And so, there will be open panels for the public with some figurines - Brashan, Gus van Sant, one of the most prominent American indie producers of our generation, who won the Golden Palm for "Elephant", was nominated for an Oscar for "Milk" and signed masterpieces such as "Parnoid Park" and "Days" Last ".

On the other hand, one has to be fair and say two things: the director's career has deteriorated unusually in the last decade, and he was signed to it in a streak of puzzling films.

On top of that, at least from a personal impression, this is not a verbal person to say the least, but maybe the zoom with the male and female students will get the best out of him?

In addition, French director Catherine Bria will also be featured in films such as "To My Sister!"

A breakthrough in the representation of sexuality and femininity in cinema;

And editor Nicholas Chowdrog, whose resume is glorious: Andrea Arnold's "Wasp," one of the best short films of all time;

"Red Road" and "Out of Water," two of the director's acclaimed feature films;

"Still Alice" which won Julian Moore an Oscar;

And two episodes in "Black Mirror", including one of the best episodes of the series - "Sun Juniper".

Just before the premiere on Apple, there will be a special workshop with the participation of those behind it - screenwriter Moshe Zonder, producers Dana Eden and Shula Spiegel and also Roni Perry, director of the corporation's drama department, who also signed "Manaich" this summer.

Promoting female creation

In the spirit of the times, the festival will place emphasis on promoting female creation.

A special panel will try to promote in the local arena the international 50:50 initiative, which as its name implies seeks to bring about equal (at least) equal representation of men and women in the film industry.

Following this, there will be for the first time a special laboratory dedicated to the development of scripts by nine early creators.

The student films of prominent directors

Almost every filmmaker was once a male or female student, or at least an early-stage creator, and the festival will dedicate a frame to short films of those who have become major names in the local industry.

In this way, it will be possible to discover for the first time or anew the first works of Nadav Lapid, Tali Shalom Ezer, Sameh Zoabi and Tomer Heiman, and we will especially recommend "The Death of Shula" by Assaf Korman, one of the most beautiful short films made in Israel, although viewing is forbidden To deal with the death of dogs.

Also a judge at the festival, his short film will also be screened.

The main competitions

And next to all this, of course, stands the bread and butter of the festival - the short film competitions.

The local competition will present what it is like the cliché article "The future generation of Israeli cinema";

The international competition will feature films not only from Israel, but also from Korea, Ghana, the United States, Nigeria, Hungary and many other countries.

In the short independent film competition, I myself serve (voluntarily) on the jury, alongside the Moore and Nadav Lapid Foundation, so I will certainly not say too much, but let's say that many of the films come with prestigious screenings and wins at other international festivals, Cannes for example.

The festival will be held online from today, Monday 21.9, until Saturday 26.9.

You can buy a ticket for watching all the movies for NIS 49.
