Nike increases profit significantly - corona crisis ensures online sales

12:15 a.m.:

The online shopping boom during the corona pandemic helped Nike to significantly increase profits in the most recent fiscal quarter.

In the three months to the end of August, the world's largest sporting goods manufacturer earned 1.5 billion dollars (1.3 billion euros), as it announced on Tuesday after the US market closed.

This corresponds to an increase of eleven percent year on year.

Nike's digital sales rose 82 percent.

In China in particular, Nike posted significantly more demand.

Nevertheless, group-wide sales fell by just under one percent to $ 10.6 billion.

Thanks to lower spending, the bottom line was that much more remained in the cash register than a year ago.

Nike was able to clearly exceed the expectations of the analysts with the quarterly figures.

The price has already risen by over 15 percent since the beginning of the year.

In the previous quarter, Nike had to accept a high loss due to closed stores and high special costs in view of the corona pandemic.

Eurostat: number of asylum seekers drops drastically in corona crisis

12:10 a.m.:

The corona crisis has led to a significant decrease in the number of asylum seekers in the EU.

In the second quarter of 2020, the number of initial applications for international protection fell by 68 percent to around 46,500 compared to the same period in the previous year, the EU statistics agency Eurostat announced on Tuesday in Luxembourg.

This sharp decline is due to the emergency measures that the EU countries have taken since the beginning of March due to the coronavirus pandemic.

In total, there were 196,600 initial asylum applications within the first six months of the year.

First the Funke media group reported on it.

Most of the applications - almost a third (14,200) - were submitted in Germany between April and June.

In relation to population size, however, the small EU country Cyprus ranks first with 880 applications.

Most of the applications across the EU were made by Syrians (7700).

Madrid's regional government warns of lockdown for the entire capital

00:05:

In view of the rapidly increasing number of corona infections in Madrid, Regional President Isabel Díaz Ayuso has warned of a lockdown in the entire capital region.

Residential areas with a total of 850,000 inhabitants have been partially cordoned off since Monday.

The residents are only allowed to leave them to go to work, school or to the doctor, among other things.

"It makes no sense to impose restrictions in some areas and not in others," said Ayuso, according to Spanish media on Tuesday.

It did not rule out that the entire capital region with a total of 6.6 million inhabitants could be affected, as the newspaper "El País" reported.

In fact, according to information on Tuesday, the number of new infections in 16 other urban areas as well as in the already partially sealed off areas is over 1000 per 100,000 inhabitants within 14 days.

To put it into perspective: In Germany this value is currently 13.5 calculated over seven days.

The comparative figure for Madrid would be 27 to a good 1000.

With more than 680,000 infections and 30,900 deaths, Spain is the country in Western Europe hardest hit by the pandemic.

About a third of the cases are registered in Madrid.

For all of Spain, the Ministry of Health reported 10,799 new infections within the past 24 hours and late reports from past days on Tuesday.

In the same period there were 241 more corona deaths.
