A customs officer was hit by a car in Tain-l'Hermitage (Drôme) on late Tuesday afternoon, reports France Bleu Drôme Ardèche.
Seriously injured, he was transported in absolute urgency to the hospital center of Valence.
The facts took place around 5 p.m., during a check carried out at a toll booth on the A7 motorway.
The vehicle which mowed down the customs officer was intercepted shortly after by the gendarmes.
The two occupants were arrested and taken into police custody.
A colleague of the customs officer who attended the scene was also taken care of by the firefighters.
