Does wearing prescription glasses reduce the risk of getting infected with Covid-19?
A study published this month in the journal
Jama Ophthalmology
suggests that they could act, with the mask obviously, as an additional bulwark against Sars-CoV-2.
Its authors observed that out of 276 patients hospitalized in the Chinese city of Suizhou between January and March, only 5.8% of them wore glasses more than eight hours a day.
However, the proportion of people with myopia in Hubei province (where Suizhou is located) is much higher, around 31.5%.
“Our results suggest that the eye may be an important route of infection for Covid-19, and more attention should be paid to preventative measures such as frequent hand washing and avoiding touching their eyes, ”
the Chinese researchers conclude.
