This is one of the side effects of the early snowfall that fell this weekend in the Alps.

This Monday, the town hall of Saint-Colomban-des-Villards, in Savoie, reported an unusual scene: 6,000 sheep found themselves blocked by these first flakes.

The sheep, who were accompanied by their shepherds at the Glandon pass, at an altitude of 1900 meters, were being evacuated by trucks on Monday afternoon.

6,000 sheep and cows stuck since Saturday by the snow in the mountains in Savoy in the Glandon pass, at 1,900 m.

When more snow than expected arrived Friday evening, the 7,000 animals were grazing around this area of mountain pastures from which the herds usually leave at the end of October.

Bad weather ahead

“1000 animals from a breeder were evacuated on Sunday.

There are 6000 left from another breeder.

Among them, 1000 will be evacuated today (Monday) and the rest in the days to come because the weather forecast is bad at the end of the week, ”said Christian Frasson-Botton, municipal councilor for this village of 130 inhabitants.

France Bleu specifies that Sunday morning, at this altitude, the temperatures had reached -6 °.

The town had launched its backup plan this weekend and organized with the department of Savoie the supply of animals which could no longer find grass under the heavy snow and reaching 30 to 50 cm thick.

6 tonnes of fodder were thus transported, thanks to a track cleared with a snowplow on this road cut off from traffic.

An almost unprecedented amount of snow

"Monday, in the opinion of the shepherd, some animals can feed themselves with grass on the slopes which have been swept by the wind", affirmed Christian Frasson-Botton.

“It's no longer a crisis situation but it can become so again.

The safeguard plan has been lifted;

the situation is under control by the breeder and the public authorities.

But beware, the weather can change quickly!

», Added the elected official.

Snow in September is regularly seen in the mountains, but such a quantity remains a "rather exceptional" event.

“In the village, we talk about 1974” as the reference year, concluded Christian Frasson -Botton.
