Trailer for the movie "The Donkey, The Lover and I" (Haifa Film Festival)

Enviously, cinemas in France are open, and even have hits.

Right now, the film that tops the box office chart is "The Donkey, the Lover and I" - a nice achievement given the fact that it is a comedic drama with a modest budget.

"In recent days we're even selling more 'Tenet' tickets by Christopher Nolan, it's pretty crazy," says screenwriter-director Carolyn Viniel.

"On the other hand, things have to be put in proportion - because of the situation, there are not many films on the market, certainly not American ones, so the competition is easier and the owners of the halls have more patience. A film can gain momentum, as we did. Another advantage is a positive film, and I think "The audience is now looking for this positivity, and the scene is in nature, which is magical for people who have been in a long closure."

Originally, the film was called "Antoinette dans les Cévennes" - as the name of the countryside in which it takes place, the Hevel region;

And like his protagonist, Antoinette, she is played by Lore Kalami, who is known from the "Ten Percent" series.

Antoinette is a Parisian teacher, who as usual in French films has an affair with a married man, who goes out on a date with his partner instead of spending time with her as promised.

In response, the disappointed protagonist decides to embark on a journey in his footsteps, and as is customary in the Swan region, does so accompanied by a donkey - who turns out over time to be more loyal, sensitive and charming than any Dushbag man.

"We have a lot of prejudices about donkeys and we are doing them an injustice," the creator says in an interview with Walla!

Culture in preparation for the screening of the film at the festival.

"We use 'donkey' as a derogatory word, but it's a very smart animal - much smarter than horses, for example. When you work with a horse, you just have to give it the same instruction over and over again, but a donkey has to enjoy learning, and if he doesn't enjoy it - he "In that sense, donkeys are more like children or dogs. While working on the film I realized some expressions in the language came from donkeys. It proves how much they have always been a part of our lives, and it's a shame we did not make enough effort to understand and appreciate them."

What was it like working with the donkey that plays your lead role?

"We had two donkeys - the star, and his double. Eventually, the double became a star, because the main and more experienced donkey was a little too technical and mechanical, and I preferred a more spontaneous donkey, with more emotion. He was undoubtedly the better player of the two."

The double became a star.

Vinyl's story is unusual.

She attended Pemis, the leading film school in France, and in 2000 wrote and directed her first film, Girlfriends, which left her with such severe trauma - that she did not return behind the camera for two decades.

"The film was screened at the Cannes Film Festival and received rave reviews, but then it went on the screens - and no one saw it," she recalls.

"I had a hard time with the thought that I was making a film and it was like a tree falling in the woods without anyone hearing. I was very sad that the halls were empty, and I was not ready for this mental struggle. To make a film, you need a lot of confidence, and as a result I completely lost confidence."

Vinyl continued to work in the industry, but wrote scripts for others.

"It was very frustrating, because the films always came out different from how I imagined them," she says.

"So I told myself it's time to direct another film, because if I do not direct it now, it will not happen again. "It's going to be okay, it was a huge relief."

What was it like working with Laur Clemie, one of the rising stars in France?

"In fact, this is the first time I work with professional actors, because in my first film, the actors had no experience. I chose Laur because I knew I needed a particularly charismatic and funny actress, otherwise a film about a woman traveling with a donkey would be pretty boring. We had never met before. "But when she read the script she asked me if I knew her, because he reflected so much on her character and her passions. She has good instincts, so I had almost no work with her. All I have left to do is look at her."

now or never.

The name of the film in English and Hebrew is very different from the original name.

Were you involved in the decision to call him that?

"I love that name, don't you like it? It's a funny name, which comes to me quite naturally, and if it makes people say 'Well, here's another French movie about cheating,' that's a good thing, because then they'll find the movie offers a lot more. From that, and it's good to surprise for good. "

The donkeys playing in the movie watched it?

"No, but there was a screening under the sky in the Swan region, and I was told that a donkey that was passing by heard the sounds of the donkeys in the film and started shaking, and it was very funny."
