More than 2800 new corona infections - new high since April

6.50 a.m.:

The number of new infections with the corona virus in Germany has reached a new high since the second half of April.

The health authorities reported 2,828 new corona infections within one day, as the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) announced on Wednesday morning.

That is over 150 more than on Friday morning, when the previously applicable maximum value since the second half of April was reported with 2,673 new infections within one day.

According to the RKI, at least 306,086 people in Germany have been proven to have been infected with the Sars-CoV-2 virus since the start of the Corona crisis (data as of October 7, 12.00 a.m.).

According to the RKI, the number of deaths in connection with a corona infection is 9562. That is 16 more than the day before.

Around 267,700 people survived the infection according to RKI estimates.

Belgium tightened

corona

rules

6.46 a.m.:

Belgium tightened the rules due to the rapid spread of the corona virus.

From Friday onwards, citizens will only have close contact with three people outside the family per month, as the new Prime Minister Alexander De Croo announced in Brussels on Tuesday.

Only four people are allowed to sit together in the café.

In future there will be curfew at 11 p.m.

Working from home is highly recommended.

"The situation with the coronavirus in our country is serious and worrying," wrote De Croo on Twitter.

"The spread of the virus is accelerating. We have to stop it."

Therefore, people would have to limit their contacts.

"Take part out of citizenship, but above all out of responsibility for the most vulnerable among us."

The new rules initially apply for one month.

120,000 students have applied for Corona bridging aid

6.36 a.m.:

According to a report, almost 120,000 students applied for Corona emergency aid from the Studentenwerke from June to September - sometimes even several times.

A total of around 244,000 applications were submitted, as reported in the newspapers of the Funke media group, citing a final report by the German Student Union (DSW).

In 150,000 cases, the bridging aid from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) was paid out to students in pandemic emergencies.

According to the report, 30 percent of the applications for Corona aid were from foreign students.

In total, around 65 million euros have been paid out to students as a non-repayable grant, with a total of 100 million euros available.

As the Funke newspapers reported, citing the DSW, 63 percent of the applications were approved and 36 percent rejected.

At one percent there are still inquiries.

US authorities dampen hope for a rapid vaccine

6.32 a.m.:

Most recently, US President Donald Trump had promised a vaccine before the presidential election on November 3rd.

However, this is extremely unlikely.

The U.S. FDA released its guidelines for accelerated approval of a corona vaccine on Tuesday.

Accordingly, manufacturers who test a vaccine in the third and final test phase on thousands of people must plan a follow-up period of at least two months after the second vaccine dose in order to collect sufficient data "to assess the risk-benefit profile of a vaccine".

The two companies Moderna and Pfizer, which are furthest in clinical trials to date, began the third phase of testing at the end of July.

Since the second dose of vaccine is given 28 days after the first dose, the follow-up period required by the FDA would end at the end of October for the very first subjects.

However, the companies would then probably not have sufficient data to apply for approval in the fast-track procedure.

Meanwhile, US media reported that the White House was trying to influence the new FDA guidelines.

Accordingly, the White House considered the follow-up time unnecessary and wanted to remove it from the guidelines.
