SPIEGEL:
Germany's forests are suffering from drought and pests, and some of the linden, maple, ash and beech trees in cities are doing badly.
What is the situation with the trees in Germany's private gardens?
Ehren:
Comparatively good.
You are dealing with relatively sheltered refuges, in which there are no cars and the rainwater seeps away better because the garden is rather unsealed.
Perhaps the neighbor's dog pisses on the trunk from time to time, but the problems with harmful dog urine are of course not as great compared to the city.
As a rule, the trees in private gardens are better cared for than those in the city.
Of course, climate change and its consequences have not passed them by.
SPIEGEL:
Are there trees that suffer particularly?
Ehren:
Yes, there are - namely trees that are not properly watered!
In conversations with private customers, we always cause astonishment when we talk about the amount of water that a young tree needs.
Some people briefly go over it with a watering can in the evening, but that is far from enough, especially not under the conditions that climate change brings with it.
My wish to all garden owners: Be more generous next year!
Don't let the trees die of thirst!
