If more than 50 out of 100,000 people are verifiably infected with the coronavirus in a week, regionally stricter rules should apply. All of Germany is now above this mark on average.

According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), the health authorities in Germany reported 7595 newly diagnosed corona infections within 24 hours on Wednesday morning.

The value is below the previous high from last Saturday, when 7830 new infections were reported.

The seven-day incidence - the number of new corona infections per 100,000 inhabitants within seven days - was given by the RKI on Wednesday as a national average of 51.3.

The previous day the value was 48.6.

On October 15, the federal and state governments decided that locally stricter rules must apply if the values of 35 or 50 new infections per 100,000 people in a week are exceeded in regions.

Because from this value it becomes increasingly difficult to track all contacts of newly infected people.

According to the RKI's daily overview of the situation in the federal states, Bavaria, Berlin, Bremen, Hesse, North Rhine-Westphalia and Saarland were above this level on Wednesday.

Hamburg had already announced on Monday that the number of new infections had exceeded 50 per 100,000 and on Wednesday reported a seven-day incidence of 58.9, while the city was still just below the 50s according to the official RKI figures -Mark lies.

The different numbers can be explained by the delay in reporting, which sometimes means that the information from the local authorities only reaches the RKI with a delay.

On Saturday, the number of new infections reached a record for the third time in a row since the start of the corona pandemic in Germany.

However, the current values are not directly comparable with those from the spring, because significantly more tests are now being carried out and fewer infections remain undetected.

According to experts, the newly reported infections are an indication of how strong the virus was in society about a week ago because of the time between infection, test, result and report.

That is why it will take some time before political measures can be reflected in the registration figures.

Urgent appeal to the population

"Currently an accelerated increase in the number of transmissions can be observed in Germany," writes the RKI in its management report on Tuesday.

"It is therefore urgently appealed that the entire population is committed to infection protection."

The RKI also includes rules of distance and hygiene outdoors, indoor ventilation and, where necessary, mouth and nose covering.

Most recently, almost a third of all districts and cities recorded by the RKI were above the threshold of 50 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants and week (data as of October 21).

In around 30 districts and cities, the value was even over 100.

According to the RKI, at least 380,762 people in Germany have been proven to have been infected with the Sars-CoV-2 virus since the beginning of the Corona crisis.

The number of deaths in connection with a corona infection was therefore 9875. That was 39 more than the previous day.

According to estimates by the RKI, there are around 302,100 recovered.
