Trailer for the movie "Above and Beyond the Moon" (Netflix)

It's long a secret that Netflix wants to be like Disney, and now they're taking another step in their attempt to align with the largest empire in Hollywood.

The streaming service exclusively brings up "Above and Beyond the Moon", its most ambitious animated film to date, and one that is hard to ignore the resemblance to and the classic hits of the competing studio, such as "Breaking the Ice".

In addition, "Above and Beyond the Moon" was directed by two creators who were part of Disney's glorious history: Glenn Kenny, who co-produced "The Little Mermaid," "Aladdin," "Beauty and the Beast" and more;

And John Kars, who co-created it "Break the Ice," among others.

Similar to Disney, which is increasingly trying to wink at Chinese audiences, for example in the remake of "Mulan," so too Netflix in "Above and Beyond the Moon," which is a joint production with a Chinese company, takes place in the country and is based on its heritage and culture.

His protagonist is a girl whose mother told her about the moon goddess Chang-ha.

After the mother dies, her grieving daughter builds a missile to travel to the moon, meet the goddess and prove she exists, just like in the stories of the late mother.

Glenn Kenny has previously held various roles as an animator and producer in Disney films, and also directed "Expensive Basketball," the short and Oscar-winning animated film based on Kobe Bryant's love song for the orange ball, but this is the first time he has directed a full-length animated film.

His debut tour was supposed to be as early as the beginning of the previous decade with "Tangled", but a heart attack prevented him from doing so, and "Above and Beyond the Moon" still allowed him to experience the experience.

In a virtual panel where journalists from around the world were also invited to attend, Kenny seemed excited about the class itself, and talked about the similarities between the protagonist here and iconic figures he painted in the past - for example Ariel from "The Little Mermaid".

"It may sound strange, but I sincerely believe that these characters I draw, existed before I painted them," he says.

"It's like they've just been waiting for you, to give them life on the page and then on screen. My characters are like my kids. I love them all equally, and I feel like I'll know them all my life. Pipei, the protagonist here, is endowed with a combination of extraordinary intelligence, "A rich imagination and determination, which allows her to go to the end with this crazy adventure. How the hell can this girl build a missile that will reach the moon? There is nothing that stands in the way of desire."

In the best of Disney's contemporary tradition, "Above and Beyond the Moon" is interwoven with eight musical numbers and almost never a few minutes pass without one of the characters bursting into song.

"How do you convey emotions?", Kenny asks and then replies - "You can do it with words, it's better to do it with images, and it's best to do it with music, it has a power that goes deep into the soul."

Will be presented in original version and dubbed versions.

The screenplay for the film was written by the prolific and esteemed filmmaker Audrey Wells, who died of cancer two years ago and the production of "Above and Beyond the Moon" came to fruition after her death.

It is available with us in dubbed versions and also in the original version.

Originally, the role of the protagonist's stepmother is played by a longtime partner of the late screenwriter - Sandra Ho, who starred in her for example in "Under the Tuscan Sky".

"I attended an event in memory of the Screenwriters' Association, and producer Jenny Rim chased me to the parking lot to tell me, 'You have to be in this movie, you have to,'" Ho says.

"I knew Audrey had written it while she was sick, and when she knew she was going to die, so I just could not read it, but Jenny insisted, and I also felt Audrey's spirit catching me and telling me 'what's going on with you? You have to do this role. I'm so glad I was convinced. "

"This script was very important to Audrey," concludes producer Flynn Cho.

"For her, it was a love letter to her daughter and her partner, and she wrote to them in it that even when you lose someone, the love you had remains forever."
