The new Peugeot 208 (Ronen Topelberg)

Once in a while, not regularly, not in every generation, a car arrives that is a new page and a new benchmark in its group.

When it happens in luxury cars it is impressive and requested.

When it happens in sports cars it is gratifying.

When this happens in a popular car that originates in a segment that mostly relies on efficiency and does not necessarily expect from it some transcendence - it is both impressive and gratifying.

The fourth-generation Volkswagen Golf and the first Ford Focus have done it compactly, the 208 does it in a super mini.

And this, the essence of the new Peugeot 208.

The current offspring of Peugeot's 200 lineage, the one that since the 205 (and let's elegantly ignore the 207) that more or less carries the company on its slender shoulders, let's face it, has tried several times to penetrate other segments - to say they have achieved there Too many points?

Oh, not really, not always.

Yellow rises

Design is really a matter of taste, but the general feedback from the environment to 208 is curiosity and lots of smiles and fingers for the super mini that is a continuation of this manufacturer's design prowess in recent years.

True, much of it goes to a color that makes it look like a little wasp and stand out in the distance against the backdrop of the parking lot dotted with the sickening local range of colors of white-silver-black.

The cabin, also with a new standard, in its appearance, combination of textures, fittings and at least in some places the quality of materials.

The highlight is of course the 3D display on the dashboard.

It is not only handsome and impressive, but also allows for a diverse data display with lots of customization options.

Something in its structure allows it to overcome the constant paul of hiding some of the data in it by the steering wheel, which I still do not tolerate its strange structure.

The only two drawbacks of the display are problematic in reading the direct sun data and the accumulation of dust on the sloping plastic cladding which also affects the clarity of the data display.

The other control systems in the driver's environment have what we know from the new Peugeot cars, for better or worse, including the air conditioning system that bothers to control it through the screen and the need to cancel the engine bleeding system while standing.

Yes, these seats are as good as they look

In the test car in the GT Line finish level, you get a long list of equipment, most of which is not one you will encounter in a small car, including those of premium brands (Audi A1 - I'm talking about you).

Proximity key and drive at the touch of a button, gearshift levers from the steering wheel, Android and Apple compatibility, wireless charging, a compartment that is also a stand for the phone (although it is quite unnecessary when there is a coupling) and no less than 4 USB sockets two front and two rear.

For young families - yes, there is backlighting for the seat, a small item that makes a big difference when the damage screams and you grope for a pacifier.

The list of safety equipment is also complete, with correction of deviation from the lane, adaptive cruise control, automatic braking, warning of a vehicle in a "dead zone", reading speed signs and synchronization with cruise control and more.

At the GT finish level the line of equipment is complete, both in comfort and safety

Beyond the back seat mentions that with all the points we told her, it's still a super mini car, the fit is for the young family, or that of grandma and grandpa and only two and a half to three grandchildren.

The structure and size of the rear doors here also create an entrance that is less suitable for adults.

The trunk on its 311 liters does not break records, has one hanging hook and a thick rubber strap close to the sidewall.

A super mini that will do the job for a modest family of movables.

Agenda note - the combination of a high charge threshold + a deep floor + a bumper that protrudes out = sometime something heavy that you take out of the trunk will knock it out.

There are two charging sockets, but the space in the back is reasonable for an adult and especially suitable for children

Buzzing on her way

At the front of the new 208 is an engine that we know from a lot of Peugeot models, this is the 1.2 three-cylinder turbocharged, here with an output of 130 hp and 23.4 kg.

You will feel the part of the three cylinders in two situations, when it wakes up suddenly if you have not disconnected the engine silencing system while standing and when you squeeze it at high rpm. The part of the 130 hp and 23.4 kg will meet the rest of the time with flexibility, Vigorous and agile. These are supported by a good simple planetary 8-speed automatic transmission, both in routine use and in sport mode.

311 liters, the charging threshold is slightly high

The contemporary troll of low-cut tires on exaggerated rims is reflected in this level of finish.

The GT Line rotates on 17-inch, 45-inch rims that will punish you from the first bump in the street, through tire noises on the highway to the moment you want to change tires.

Still, by neutralizing this problem, as long as the road conditions are not too bad, the ride comfort at 208 is good.

Impressions are gained in a fluid, global, diffused way with the 16-inch trim, which is likely to outperform the 16-inch trim.

The 17-inch rims look good, but detract from comfort

Peugeot's small cars have always received compliments for their road behavior (and I've deducted the 207 again), and also for the 208 petrol I'm happy to shower some.

So OK, there's no steering wheel here that conveys nuances of the torque of the chassis, or when the rear wheels disconnected and it's just you and the azimuth of the front, but come on - this car turns great, changes direction well, and even when side-to-side traffic joins braking into Turning, or accelerating out has a lot of ability to accommodate driving feedbacks in a way that elicits a smile on an occasional descent at the interchange and certainly when these are winding roads.

The expectation to drive its GTI at the moment has risen to another level.

At the end of two days and a bit of the 208 test shows an average consumption of 13.5 km per liter. With the right foot a little more compassionate and less stops to fill out test forms when the air conditioner is running it can be easily improved.

Peugeot's lion claws front, it looks much better at night

Summary

On an almost philosophical level, I am happy to find such a car for two reasons.

The first is that a girl or young guy as an individual or as a couple that this is their first car (not necessarily as new) may know how to ask and look for that directness and driving pleasure in their next car, we have a lost generation of steering wheel holders (unable to call them drivers) that is a foreign concept.

The second reason is that this is proof that a manufacturer whose vertex is a car enthusiast is often a guarantee for excellent cars.

And at PSA, Carlos Towers, the CEO at the level of walking around in an office robe, is quite like that - a big amateur including a regular participation in classic rally races and also the owner of the Peugeot 504 Coupe V6 and Alpin A110.

In price, the GT Line finish level despite its virtues will have a hard time finding a wide audience

And back to the 208, bottom line - a great car, probably the best super mini on the market today, I'm probably saying that until the comparative test between it and the new competitors it can not boast of a title.

But what sabotages her in all this jesus and joy is the price.

Of course the price.

Her success in winning this car in Europe has prevented her from coming to Israel, and even when she settles here she does so with two very high levels of finish, the GT line you see here?

125 thousand shekels.

The level of finish below the premium?

119 thousand shekels.

It does not matter if compared to the high finish levels of its competitors it probably justifies the price or it is really a very good car.

It is simple because in the absence of versions that are priced at the heart of this segment, where the sensitivity to a few thousand shekels here or there is significant, this may decide its fate and make it too rare.

The differences between the petrol and tram version (pictured) are very moderate

Electric lion

The worldview of Peugeot and the PSA concern when it comes to propulsion systems for their cars is to allow the customer the choice between a variety of propulsion methods based on existing models.

It has advantages in the practical aspects of production based on common platforms, and at least according to the manufacturer also in terms of ease of mobility of customers between internal combustion cars and those with electric propulsion.

Unlike Renault for example which currently produces the electric Zoe alongside the Clio with internal combustion engines, in the Peugeot the differences between the standard 208 and the electric one are moderate.

Different grille, lack of exhausts and the e symbol on the rear beam.

The exterior and interior dimensions are the same, including the trunk volume.

The more significant difference is the weight - 1,530 kg for the electric one compared to 1,233 for the petrol car.

The patented concept of 3D projection

In all aspects of the driver environment, human engineering and space, you are looking at a car that is exactly the same as a regular one.

Except the instrumentation, which in this version is identical to the premium S finish level of the petrol car and includes 16-inch rims, a 10-inch 3D dashboard, compatibility for Apple and Android, three driving modes, peripheral sensors, a smart key, 4 USB sockets and much more.

The safety systems are the same except for a vehicle alert in a "dead zone" that is absent here.

The electric propulsion system delivers 136 hp and 26.5 kg.

The gear in the gearbox is single and despite the weight, thanks to the availability of power and torque it accelerates faster to 100 km / h, 8.3 seconds compared to 8.7 seconds in petrol. The maximum speed however is limited to 150 km / h.

The battery capacity is 50 kilowatt-hours and charging times vary between the two versions in which the car is sold single-phase (7.4 kilowatts) or three-phase (11 kilowatts) as it was in the test car and there is no more ace up the sleeve - option for fast charging at 100 kilowatt DC positions.

The significance of the latter is enormous because as such charging stations continue to appear in Israel, much of the awkwardness involved in waiting a long time for charging will disappear.

The ability to charge to 80 percent, equivalent to 270 miles in a time of half an hour, or even half or a third of the time if you only need the few tens of miles to get home is significant. This is a huge advantage it has over competitors.

The better comfort of the 16-inch rims is offset by a stiffer suspension calibration

As with fuel consumption, the official rule of thumb of an electric car is that you can reduce between 10 and 15 percent to get the numbers of the real world, the one where you go for occasional detours, or travel with an air conditioner most of the time, and so on.

Our results overlapped with this estimate, with a realistic 300 km between electrifications. In practice, if your daily commute includes a number that is even close to it - you and this car are not in the same focus group at all. And enough with the question of travel to Eilat, we have already written it in a test of Nissan Leaf, you can really ask the same question "What if we have to lead a grand piano?". In the test, the 208 electric consumed 16.2 kWh per 100 km.

With the power availability that characterizes electric motors, the performance of the 208 electric is excellent, in normal mode and even more so in sporty strong exit from the place kicks it forward with surprising intensity, with a tire spin soundtrack, also intermediate accelerations excellent and uniform thrust with very little recoil up to them 150 km / h maximum. I would be happy to find here an option to control the level of regenerative braking beyond the two modes available, mainly because I found that the first is not strong enough and the second too strong.

The road behavior is excellent in gasoline, confusing on the streetcar (Photo: Ronen Topelbag)

The extra weight, and the need to harden the shocks and calibrate it differently detracts very little from the ride comfort.

It is not much different from that of the petrol version, but it is credited to the 17-inch rim of the first more than to the calibration of the tram.

So overall a completely reasonable compromise.

On the winding road, on the other hand, the significance of the 300 kg in the weight differences between it and the petrol car is very noticeable. Beyond the fact that you "carry" 3.5-4 adults all the time, the effect on the excellent dynamic ability of the petrol car is very tangible. The light and six turn to me, but a car that runs a bit heavily, and reacts differently. It still does it better than some non-electric competitors and without the battery weight, but come on, this is not the most honed tooth of this lion.

Two charging options, single-phase and three-phase, the second is clearly preferable (Photo: manufacturer)

Summary

Like its petrol sister, the 208 electric is an absolutely excellent car.

This was the second time I told myself I could really see myself living with an electric car (the first time was with the Porsche Taiken ...).

As long as you do not purify driving on a daily basis, the main drawback of its behavior will not bother you.

But like the compliments, the review, like its gasoline sister, has compromises in the back seat, but more importantly the price.

NIS 156,000 (153 for the single-phase version - not relevant) is a lot of money for a super mini car, electric or not.

Despite the scholarly explanations that in a particular route of use, the total cost of maintaining an electric car makes it worthwhile in about three years on a journey of about 15-17 thousand km - we are not yet there in the consumer perception. From its group, it's hard for customers to see it as relevant.

In a reality where the price tag in the showroom determines, it will be difficult for her to find customers (Photo: manufacturer)

Even the current competition from home in the form of the Opel Corsa E (single-phase charging) for NIS 148,000 will make life difficult for her, later we will also see a representative of Citroen and other European competitors and even Dacia heating electric motors along the way.

Long before it made cars, Peugeot was and still is a maker of pepper and salt grinders known for their quality, so a paraphrase of that business aspect: the dish was very tasty, but the bill at the end of the meal left a bitter taste.
